Introduction
The program focuses on modern history, culture, and politics with respect to Czechia in a Central European and global context. It combines education in history and area studies with active training in the Czech language. It is organized and executed by the Institute of International Studies (IMS) in cooperation with the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of the Charles University.
The program is designed to equip students with Czech language fluency, cultural competence, historical knowledge, and social understanding of Central Europe. It greatly enhances the student’s ability to consider issues from an interdisciplinary perspective and to conduct research and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
About
History and Area Studies (HAS) is an interdisciplinary three-year Bachelor's Degree that focuses on modern history, culture, and politics with respect to the Czech Republic in a Central European and global context. It combines education in history and area studies with active training in the Czech language.
The program focuses on the unique and challenging political and social environment of the region.
As a student of HAS, you will:
- Learn about approaches and methods from different disciplines including social and political studies and international relations;
- Study issues that are related to Central Europe;
- Learn the Czech Language;
- Enhance your employability by developing your professional and academic skills.

Program Outcome
History and Area Studies (HAS) allows students to develop a blend of specialist area knowledge, analytical expertise, and language skills of Central Europe. It prepares its students with a thorough grounding in the historical, societal, political, and cultural aspects that play an essential role in Central Europe. Therefore, our graduates will be able to analyze individual topics arising within the region of their interest from a multidisciplinary point of view in terms of social sciences and modern history.
As a HAS graduate, you will:
- Master the Czech Language;
- Be able to understand current issues in their historical, societal, political, and cultural context;
- Be able to deliver qualified comments on the developments of states and societies of Central Europe;
- Be able to employ academic knowledge in practice.
Career Opportunities
History and Area Studies prepares its graduates for professions and research careers where knowledge of contemporary Central Europe is of relevance.
HAS graduates will become highly skilled employees in the civil service and diplomacy, NGOs, and international institutions as well as in private companies and mass media. Many of them will continue to pursue a Master’s degree.
