Options for Specialization

In addition to a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, Dominican’s Mathematics program offers specialized academic tracks geared towards particular math-related professions. Each course of study develops your analytical problem-solving and quantitative reasoning abilities while preparing you to bring your mathematical skills to life in the most fascinating and challenging careers.

• BA in Mathematics with Preparation for Childhood Education/BA in Mathematics with Preparation for Adolescence Education: Teaching is one of the most rewarding professions available, and skilled math teachers are in especially high demand as math skills decline across the country. A career as a math teacher will engage and enliven your quantitative skills again and again as you watch your students learn and grow. If you wish to teach Mathematics at the elementary school or high school level, our two Education tracks will equip you with knowledge and practice that will lead towards New York State certification and will provide you with the math expertise you require to become an effective classroom educator.

Summary of Requirements

All Mathematics majors take certain foundational courses that are critical to a thorough understanding of advanced mathematics. These include Calculus I and II; Introduction to Statistics; Vision of Geometry; Abstract Algebra; and Linear Algebra (if you have chosen the Childhood Education track, you may choose either Abstract or Linear Algebra). In addition to these courses, your program will follow one of the following courses of study:

• The BA in Mathematics program perfects your math knowledge through courses in Probability; Inferential Statistics; Calculus III; Advanced Calculus; Differential Equations; and Topics in Mathematics. At the same time, this program equips you to apply your analytical and critical thinking skills to related fields by offering 12 credits, chosen under advisement, in either the Natural Sciences or Computer Information Systems.
• Champion educators require expertise both in subject matter and in classroom pedagogy, and our two Mathematics Education tracks, Mathematics with Preparation for Childhood Education and Mathematics with Preparation for Adolescence Education will put you solidly on that path. Students preparing to teach mathematics will become competent in those areas specifically recommended by the Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
  • The BA in Mathematics with Preparation for Childhood Education will prepare you for New York State certification to teach math at the elementary school level. If you choose this track, your course of study will be specifically designed to increase your knowledge of mathematics and to train you in the most effective methods of imparting that knowledge to children. This course of study includes 31 credits of Mathematics courses, including courses in algebra, calculus, geometry, statistics, and history of mathematics, as well as practicum courses.   • The BA in Mathematics with Preparation for Adolescence Education will prepare you for New York State certification to teach math at the high school level. If you choose this track, you will be educated in the science of Mathematics and in how the understanding of that science may be imparted successfully to young adults. This course of study includes 37 credits of Mathematics courses, including courses in calculus, algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics, and history of mathematics, as well as elective courses and courses in teaching Mathematics.

Ask your high school counselor to forward transcripts directly to the Office of Admissions

ACT/SAT

If English is not the first language of the applicant, a minimum TOEFL score of 80 on the internet-based test (I.B.T.), or 550 on the traditional paper test, or 213 on the computer-based test is required for admission.

Submit the results of one of the following examinations to the Office of Admissions:

1. Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.) of the College Entrance Examination Board. The C.E.E.B. Code for Dominican College is 2190.
2. The American College Testing (A.C.T.) Assessment Test. The A.C.T. code for Dominican College is 2730.

A meeting with an admissions counselor is not always required but is always desirable. Some applicants may be asked to meet with a member of the Admissions staff.
