Introduction
In the globalized economy, two service sectors are prominent in terms of their contribution to growth. These service sectors derive from the fields of financial services and shipping. In general, financial science focuses on the management of financial resources and risks as well as on the methods of obtaining funding for economic activities. Shipping deals with the science of managing international shipping operations on which much of the global economic activity depends. In both areas, a professional presence of well-trained technocrats / scientists being capable to respond adequately to changes in the economic environment is of vital importance.
The programme offers the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge in both disciplines and to choose a specialization in one of them through a series of specialization modules. Classes are taught by academics of recognised standing with doctoral studies and teaching experience in major universities of the United States of America, the United Kingdom and Australia, with an internationally recognized scholarly work.
During the first two years of study, modules in Economics, Accounting, Statistical Analysis, Finance, Shipping and Commerce are offered, followed by specialized modules in contemporary topics of Finance or Shipping. For the Finance direction, modules inter alia, in Financial Analysis, Econometrics, International Financial Markets, Investment Management and Banking are offered while for the Shipping direction, modules in Shipping operations management, Chartering, Maritime Insurance, Distribution and Maritime Law are offered.
In the third and fourth year of the curriculum, students choose to specialize in one of two offered directions: Finance or Shipping. Students must choose advanced modules in the specialization of their choice in order to deepen their knowledge. In addition, students choose from a list of elective modules a number of modules aimed at expanding their knowledge.
The degree in Commerce, Finance and Shipping provides students with the necessary skills for immediate employment in the areas of administration, economics, finance and shipping and transport. It also enables them to enroll in postgraduate degrees in renowned universities or continue their studies towards the award of a professional title (ACCA, ICS, etc.). The Department’s undergraduate degree is designed to properly prepare students for postgraduate curricula leading to the award of postgraduate degrees in Finance, Shipping or Business Administration (MBA) and other related disciplines.
