Chemistry is a central science that is important to the intellectual and technological advances in society and many of the sciences. The boundaries between chemistry and other science fields are continually blurring and thus chemistry remains an important part of a liberal arts education.

The History Department offers a major, a minor, and elective courses for non-majors. Curricular offerings are organized by the history of individual nations, regions, and social groups, while following the movements of people and ideas across geopolitical and metaphorical boundaries.

The music program offers both a major and a minor, as well as courses and activities for non-majors. Courses are designed to teach students to listen to music intelligently, develop musical perception, master the skills of music, and apply them creatively.

The program in ancient civilization consists principally of courses in art history, classics, Jewish studies, and philosophy. This interdisciplinary program covers the entire spectrum of ancient Mediterranean culture including Greek, Hebrew, and Latin languages. By combining art history, Jewish studies, and philosophy with what has been traditionally identified as classics (Greek and Latin language and literature), the Clark program in ancient civilization presents established disciplines in a stimulating and original configuration.

The art history program focuses on the visual arts and the social, cultural and historical context in which art is created. Majors may take courses in Ancient and Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, and Modern art history or other areas. For those considering teaching, museum and gallery work, arts conservation or arts management, the major is designed to meet the student's needs and may include an internship at an appropriate institution.

Students majoring in Asian Studies are expected to take 12 courses, at least four of which will be completed in one of Clark's study-abroad programs in Asia. Of the 12 courses, at least five must be at the 200-level. Students may specialize in China, Japan, or more broadly across Asia (including East, South, and Southeast Asia). Through an interdisciplinary approach, students explore the history, economics, politics, development, culture, languages, and international relations of Asia. Our program encompasses all regions of this diverse and multifaceted continent: East, Southeast, and South Asia.

One of the most exciting and influential areas of science today, biochemistry and molecular biology (BCMB) exists at the intersection of biology and chemistry. Exploring the cellular and molecular building blocks of living organisms is a fascinating -- and humbling -- experience, as you uncover the very conditions and interactions that make life (and you) possible. Leading to a bachelor of arts degree, the biochemistry and molecular biology major puts you on the fast track to discovery, allowing you to engage in research as early as your first year, co-author research papers with faculty members or graduate students, and present those papers at professional conferences.

The study of biology is central to understanding the world around us. Our department offers undergraduate and graduate programs steeped in research that reflects the complexity and diversity of living organisms. Working closely with faculty, students explore everything from cell and molecular biology to ecology and evolution. The Department of Biology offers both a major and a minor that prepare students for careers in the biological and biomedical sciences. The Department provides support for other programs within the University that require students to obtain a background in one or more subfields of biology and meets the needs of non-science majors who wish to integrate the science of biology into a liberal-arts curriculum.

The major in Business Economics combines the study of economic theories and analytical tools with the development of functional business skills. Students in Business Economics will gain a deep understanding of how markets operate at the micro and macro levels and develop skillsets to deliver solutions in rapidly changing business environments. A total of sixteen units is required for this program. The curriculum includes two prerequisites, six Business core courses, five Economics core courses, two electives, and one capstone. Students must take all courses for the major for a letter grade.

The Language, Literature and Culture Department aims to promote students’ competency in learning other languages, and to broaden and enrich their education through in-depth study of other cultures. Mastering a language includes listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency. Students can easily apply these skills to other disciplines at Clark and to their future professions.

Community, Youth, and Education Studies (CYES) is an interdisciplinary major that bridges Community Development, Critical Youth Studies, and Education Studies. In addition to the power of interdisciplinarity, CYES majors and minors engage in social justice oriented “praxis.” Toward that end, student in the major take a sequence of 11 courses that guides and supports them to critically interrogate their social world, reflexively examine their social location within that world, engage in social change, and reflect critically on their work for a broader audience. The aim of CYES is to prepare students for engaged scholarship and leadership in the 21st century, working for social justice across a wide-range of educational, cultural, institutional, and linguistic boundaries and borders.

Comparative Literature is a wide-ranging, multicultural program of studies in cultural production (e.g., poetry, prose, drama, film, and digital production and related arts). Housed in the Department of Language, Literature and Culture, Comparative Literature is by nature interdisciplinary and has strong ties to several other departments in the University. Stories are the anchor of cultures and civilizations both ancient and modern. They connect people in powerful ways. In the comparative literature major, you'll explore how literature -- as well as film, music, and new media -- can build bridges across national borders, languages, and historical eras.

The Department of Computer Science at Clark University provides a supportive environment and offers rigorous courses and programs, with excellent career prospects for students. We think of computer science neither as a narrow path to the next killer app, nor indeed to any specific product. Rather, computer science is a broad discipline that provides the means to solve complex challenges more efficiently and effectively than ever before.

Data Science, broadly speaking, develops techniques for distilling knowledge and information out of empirical data. It is a dynamic, newly emerging field that combines techniques from Statistics, Mathematics, and Computer Science. It has applications particularly relevant to Clark's programs in Economics, Business Analytics, GIS, IDCE, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, although it can also interact with the quantitative aspects of any discipline. Nationwide, Data Science is emerging as an important and popular area of study with excellent employment prospects.

Economics offers a flexible yet consistent framework for understanding key issues facing the economy and society--from globalization of international trade and finance to global warming. The major and minor in economics offer students an opportunity to learn the key elements of this framework and provide them with ample opportunities to apply it to a wide range of key economic issues. The Ph.D. program enriches the intellectual community in economics with opportunities for undergraduates to take advanced courses not typically available to undergraduate majors.

The interdisciplinary environmental science major introduces students to physical, biological, geographical and policy aspects of the natural environment. Following a set of common core courses, majors choose one of three tracks: Earth System Science, Environmental and Conservation Biology, or Environmental Science and Policy. The major provides training for those who want to continue on to graduate school or establish management, fieldwork, or laboratory careers in areas as diverse as ecology, conservation biology, teaching, environmental planning, protection, or regulation, water or air monitoring, and policy development.

Today's financial industry requires rigorous and specific training in addition to general management, economics and mathematics skills. Clark's major in finance aims to cover the important skills required in today's financial industry: investment analytics, knowledge about capital markets and various capital market vehicles, corporate finance, and emerging topics such as financial derivatives (such as options, futures, swaps, etc.), cryptocurrencies, green investing, and impact investing. The finance major as well as the courses included in it will help Clark students gain essential skills to launch into the highly competitive industry, and eventually become creative and socially responsible financial managers, experts, or researchers in both private and public sectors.

Geography majors have the opportunity to work on research projects with faculty members and graduate students in one of the most prestigious programs of geography worldwide. Summer Fellowships are available for qualified students to participate in the Human-Environment Regional Observatory (HERO) program, which is an intensive summer and academic-year research effort focused on environmental change in New England. Eligible majors also have the opportunity to enter the accelerated M.S. in GIScience program.

Global Environmental Studies (GES) majors study the relations between society and environment. The major is structured so that students can critically understand how economic, cultural and political processes transform the earth's environment. Completing the GES major involves taking classes that explore the relationship between society and environment from differing disciplinary perspectives. This means that although the major is administered by the School of Geography, GES majors can take classes that count towards the major in other programs, including: Visual and Performing Arts; International Development, Community and Environment; Biology; Chemistry, Physics, Economics; Political Science; Management; Philosophy; Sociology and Women’s and Gender Studies.

The marketing major focuses on topics such as strategic planning, consumer psychology, effective communication, branding (and personal branding), digital technology, social networking, sustainable business practices, and data-driven decision making. The undergraduate marketing programs at Clark include courses that provide students with hands on marketing planning experiences and experiential projects and connect them with businesses and marketing experts.

In keeping with liberal-arts traditions, Clark's mathematics major provides a solid education in mathematical principles for students who wish to apply mathematics in other fields and students who wish to pursue mathematics in graduate school. Clark mathematics majors have gone on to graduate school in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and computer science at such universities as Brown, Cornell, NYU (Courant Institute), and Stonybrook.
