Introduction
Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education
Chowan University’s School of Education is committed to excellence in teaching, learning, and service, and works one-on-one to achieve this goal in every Education student! Chowan is small enough to make this a reality, with faculty and advisors checking on their students and the progress they have made regularly to make sure they achieve their individual goals. Teachers can help students overcome any difficulties they may encounter, attesting to last year’s 100% passing rate of our Elementary Education majors taking the Praxis II exam!
Elementary Education students are specifically trained through coursework and fieldwork to develop professional and leadership skills for use in elementary schools – Kindergarten through 6th grade.
One of the main ways Chowan University’s School of Education distinguishes itself from others’ programs is our partnerships with area public schools allowing Education majors to:
- Gain and hone skills in real-world experiences
- Respond to a variety of elementary students’ needs
- Learn the art of working with parents, other teachers, and the community
- Build a strong resume before you even graduate!
Another way Chowan goes beyond the classroom to distinguish the School of Education program is through our top-notch resources, among which are:
- TaskStream Electronic Portfolios
- Blackboard Online Systems
- Advanced Smart Classrooms
- Campus-Wide Wireless Internet Access
- On-campus Evaluation Exams
- Model Teacher Education Consortium
- Eligibility to Apply for NC Licensure Upon Graduation.
The Whitaker Library on the Chowan campus houses the Education department’s Instructional Materials Center which contains current state-adopted textbooks in licensure areas, curriculum guides, thematic activity books, children’s Big Books, maps and globes, and other professional books and resources stressed by Chowan’s Education program for developing effective teachers. All elementary education majors must successfully complete the University and School of Education requirements and pass the Foundations of Reading Test and the General Education Test as required for North Carolina Teaching Licensure.
