Introduction
The Economics and Finance Program at the Centre integrates a broad background in economics with finance fundamentals. the program offers a major (but no minor) within a liberal arts educational philosophy.
The economics curriculum has four goals: competence in the fundamentals of economic theory; capability in quantitative and communication tools for economic analysis and presentation; familiarity with economic processes, policies, and institutions; and acquaintance with critical perspectives on both economic theory and institutions. Within this framework, students can assemble courses to highlight international economics, finance, and policy analysis concentrations and prepare for graduate programs in business, law, public policy, and economics, among others.
The program encourages majors to consider course work or minors in mathematics, computer science, social studies, modern foreign languages, history, and philosophy. It is strongly recommended that students who are interested in international economics participate in a Centre College off-campus program.
Special Opportunities
In addition to the curriculum, you will be able to participate in several supplemental programs designed to broaden your perspective on the financial world around you. Centre brings in business people and academicians worldwide to provide students with insights into national and international political and economic processes. The centre also allows you to study political and economic systems firsthand in China, England, France, or Mexico.
Centre students work closely on an independent study with faculty members who have academic experience and corporate, small business, and consulting experience.
Further opportunities are available for on-the-job experience through the Centre’s internship program.
Center is a select group of schools with a chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international honour society in economics.
Internships
An internship can provide a valuable experience which is necessary for the competitive workforce. Options range from insurance companies and investment firms to commercial banks and the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce.
Careers
Faculty members are committed to helping you develop a perspective that encourages life pursuits of decision-making rather than decision-taking. Centre’s broad-based preparation provides career options in many fields, including banking, law, business, consulting, and nonprofit organizations.
The curriculum provides a strong foundation for advanced study, especially for business, law, economics, and public policy degrees. Some of the graduate and professional schools attended by recent graduates include Georgetown, Indiana, Johns Hopkins, London School of Economics, Maryland, North Carolina, Princeton, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Wake Forest, and Wisconsin.
