Introduction
Mechanical Engineering is the discipline that focuses on the design of many types of machinery and equipment used in transportation, manufacturing, air and space transportation; consumer products; robots; biomedical devices; and energy conversion systems. Mechanical engineers use thermodynamics, heat transfer, dynamics, thermal and fluid mechanics, design software, engineering materials, and the principles of mathematics and science to develop solutions to problems. Students can achieve a level of specialization through elective courses in machine design or thermal systems.
A major goal of the program is to provide its graduates with the analytical and practical skills needed to perform mechanical design in a variety of fields.
Program Outcome
What You Can Learn
- Design of conventional and alternative energy conversion systems
- How to design, build, and test prototype engineering systems
- Theory and practice in air conditioning including psychrometrics, load estimating, heating and cooling systems, and fluid design and controls
Curriculum
1. Major requirements (66 units) and additional requirements (21 units)
Major requirements (66 units)
ME 1, ME 2, ME 26, ME 31, ME 32, ME 95, ME 112, ME 115, ME 116, ME 118, ME 125, ME 135, ME 136, ME 140, ME 145, ME 154, ME 156 (40 units)

ECE 71 or CSCI 40, ECE 91, ECE 91L (7 units)
Design Applications (7 units)
ME 155, ME 159, ME 166
Technical Area Courses (6 units)
Take a minimum of 3 units in Group A (ME 122, ME 137, ME 142, ME 144, ME 146, ME 162, or ME 164)
A maximum of 3 units in Group B (ME 180, ME 190, ME 191T; ECE 121, ECE 121L, ECE 155) may be substituted for a course in Group A with the faculty advisor's approval.
Additional requirements (21 units)
MATH 76, MATH 77, MATH 81, PHYS 4A, PHYS 4AL, PHYS 4B, PHYS 4C
2. General Education requirements (48 units)**
COMM 3, 7, or 8 (GE Area A1); ENGL 10 (GE Area A2); HIST 11 or 12 (GE Area D1); select one course from each of the following GE Areas: B2, D2, and F. For the C1 requirement, no additional course is necessary because the following ME major courses are double counted to satisfy this (ME 26 and ME 95).
Engineering majors are exempt from G.E. areas A3, E, ID, and the third course in Area C
The following courses are required to satisfy both G.E. and major requirements:
CHEM 1A/1AL (GE Area B1)
MATH 75 (GE Area B4)
PHIL 20 (GE Area C2)
ME 134 (GE Area IB)
For PHIL 120 (GE Area IC)
3. Other requirements (9 units)
American Government and Institutions (PLSI 2), Multicultural and International (MI), and Upper-division writing. Note: Mechanical Engineering majors are exempt from the MI requirement.
4. Sufficient elective units to meet required total units (if needed)
5. Total (123 units)
