Learning Community
Quality of life is becoming increasingly important in the way we spend our spare time. In the Bachelor of Leisure & Events Management, you will learn how to create memorable experiences.
The program is delivered thematically. Students operate in an international learning community, which involves a mix of Dutch and non-Dutch (international) students in one classroom. The regular program takes four years, but there is a possibility to do a 3-year program.
The Leisure & Events Management program is also offered in Dutch Leisure & Events Management. Breda University of Applied Sciences also offers a three-year academic program in Leisure, Bachelor of Science Leisure Studies.

Curriculum
Year 1
In year 1 (propaedeutic year), you will gain knowledge about the Leisure & Events profession through what we refer to as 'challenges'. You will complete a total of nine challenges in the first year. During the first challenge, you will get to know fellow students, for example, which helps you feel at home in school. At the beginning of the year, you will start with basic knowledge, but as the year progresses, the level of knowledge will increase.
The academic year always consists of two semesters. At the end of a semester, your skills are tested with an individual assessment. You will be assessed on your theoretical, research, professional, and societal skills. In addition to the challenges, you will take a number of courses during the year, such as Dutch, English, and Financial Management.
Year 1 is all about discovering whether this study program is a fit for you – and whether you are a fit for the program. A wonderful journey of discovery, which we would like to undertake together with you.
Year 2
In year 2, you choose the broad Leisure & Events Management program or join one of six specializations. Whichever direction you choose, you will learn a lot about the theory and practice of the leisure industry. You will work on real-life assignments for the field, receive guest lectures and regularly visit companies.
Year 3
In the second or third year (depending on your study direction) you will do a placement. Once in a while, you come back to school to exchange experiences and learn from each other. You will learn from a professional in the field and support them in daily activities. You will also work on assignments such as the development of a sponsorship plan for a sports event, the organization of an event, a target group analysis for the cultural sector or an amusement park, concept and product development, or policy analysis. You can do your placement in the Netherlands or abroad. Breda University of Applied Sciences has a large international network and will help you find the right placement.
Year 4
In the first half of the fourth year, students work on one large-scale project or a variety of smaller projects commissioned by the leisure industry within the scope of their minor track. You may, for instance, organize a festival, write policy plans or investigate the marketing activities of a sports club. The second half of the fourth year is reserved for your individual graduation assignment. At the request of an organization from the industry, you will conduct research in your specialist area, give advice and make an implementation plan for this.
Pre-master's
BUas offers its own pre-master's programmes:
- Pre-master Leisure and Tourism Studies If you would like to study Leisure and Tourism in greater depth, our Leisure and Tourism Studies pre-master’s track might be just what you are looking for. You will start this pre-master’s track after your professional bachelor’s degree. The track lasts one year, after which you can move on to the academic master’s programme of Leisure and Tourism Studies at Breda University of Applied Sciences (one year). So, if you did a three-year (short) bachelor’s degree, you can obtain your academic master’s degree in only five years’ time in total!
- Strategic Business Management and Marketing (SBM). If your academic results are good, you will be offered the opportunity of attending this pre-master’s programme in your fourth year. Successful completion of this track will give you direct access, after Breda University of Applied Sciences, to various Master of Science programmes in business-related studies in management and marketing at several partner universities. A few examples are the universities of Maastricht, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In this way, it will be possible for you to earn an academic master's degree within five years' time or, after having completed an accelerated three-year track, even within four years' time.
After your fourth year, you can also opt for a pre-master’s programme of a Dutch research university to gain direct access to their master’s programmes.
Study load and coaching
The average study load for this program amounts to approximately 40 hours a week, during 40 weeks. How many hours a week you will actually spend studying depends greatly on the person and differs per week. You may have different deadlines and tests at different moments, so good planning skills will be critical to your success.
Areas of specialization
After your propaedeutic phase, you can choose to continue with the regular study program of Leisure & Events Management, or you can opt for one of the specialization areas. The specialization areas are offered in English and in Dutch. Within the Dutch-taught variant, you will study a substantial part of the program in Dutch, such as certain meetings and sessions, and creating documents and products. The literature and theory lectures may still be offered in English though. This will prepare you for a career in the Netherlands, but with the capacity of maintaining relations and cooperating with the international market.
