Introduction
The Humanities program operates on the assumption that the primary purpose of education is to become fully human.
Transfer students are able to transfer in the maximum number of hours earned from other institutions.
Humanities students are prepared for a variety of graduate programs and for jobs that require both reasoning skills and people skills.
Flatt’s job, as he sees it, is to link what the Bible says about who we are, what we ought to think, and how we ought to live with the classics. “Grappling with these questions will be extremely enriching,” he said. “I am there to guide and curate this experience for our students, to introduce students to these great thinkers, and then to say, ‘Go now and dialogue with them.’”
Tyler Flatt, Assistant Professor of Humanities
Learning Outcomes

- Students will be able to integrate systematic and historical theology into a larger biblical framework.
- Students will be able to comprehend, interpret, discuss, and analyze written communication of various genres.
- Students will be able to describe the history of civilizations and the forces shaping contemporary society.
Program of Study
Humanities students can choose from either the Bachelor of Science in Humanities or the Bachelor of Science in Humanities with an emphasis in history.
The Bachelor of Science in Humanities is designed for students who want a comprehensive education in the humanities combined with biblical and ministry-related courses. It is intended to help students prepare for a variety of occupations, including church and para-church ministries, or further graduate studies, through reflective engagement with history, literature, and philosophy.
The Bachelor of Science in Humanities with an emphasis in history is for those students who desire to teach history at the secondary level. This is a non-certified degree, allowing students who complete this program to begin working in most Christian and private schools. This degree will also allow a student the needed entry classes to earn a Masters of Teaching (MAT) from another university. Most colleges or universities that have a MAT program require 30-50 hours of history before entering. This degree forms the basis for that admittance.
The Elementary Education Minor will only be offered to those who are enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Humanities with an emphasis in history. This minor will allow those students to have a solid foundation in education: Introduction to Education, Child, and Adolescent Development, etc. This program will also allow students to begin earning some field experience within secondary schools to develop classroom management techniques, preparing them for success in the classroom.
Admissions Requirements
- Pastor/Church Recommendation Form
When filling out our online application, recommendation forms are emailed to those whom you’ve indicated should receive them.
Family members may not complete a recommendation form. Recommenders must have known the applicant for a minimum of one year. If for some reason, recommendations do not reflect the proper amount of diversity, the Admissions Office may request additional recommendations. - Spiritual Autobiography
When filling out the online application you’ll find a space to type your Spiritual Autobiography. The Spiritual Autobiography is a typed essay — no longer than 500 words — documenting your conversion, concisely articulating the gospel and telling your reasons for choosing Boyce College. - Official Transcripts
Transcription from all educational institutions is required. Official High School transcripts or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) test scores are necessary unless the applicant has more than 24 college hours of post-high school college credit (dual enrollment courses do not count towards these 24 hours). It is best for applicants to request that transcripts be sent directly from their school to the Southern Seminary Admissions Office. In no case will the seminary consider as official a transcript marked “Issued to Student.” For transfer students, we also require other college and/or university transcripts - Application Fee
A $40 non-refundable application fee is due to the admissions office before the student’s application packet can be processed. - ACT/SAT/CLT Scores
All applicants (including home-schooled students) are required to submit scores from either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), American College Test (ACT), or the Classic Learning Test (CLT). The SAT code for Boyce College is 3858 and the ACT code is 5522. Applicants who are 24 or older or have passed 15 hours (post-high-school) from (a) a regionally accredited college or (b) a college with AABC accreditation, and have maintained at least a C average, are not required to submit these standardized test scores. (SAT, ACT, and CLT scores are not used as a basis of admission to Boyce College but are used to help evaluate a student’s ability to do college-level work.) Test scores can be waived for applicants 24 years or older. - Housing Application
All applicants (including internet and extension center applicants) are required to affirm or deny their need for campus housing. Campus housing constraints require us to know of housing needs at the earliest possible date. The following link will take you to our housing application. - Documents of Citizenship
Documentation of immigration classification for students who are not citizens of the United States.
