Introduction
The Department of Textile and Fashion Design at Bahçeşehir University possesses an educational curriculum that reflects and shapes the cultural values of fashion, emphasizing diversity, innovation, and originality. Founded on “bridging tradition to the future,” our vision offers a unique educational model that prioritizes the relationship and collaboration between art, design, craftsmanship, and technology. The use of English as the language of instruction is a significant factor in enabling students to attain an international standard of communication skills and professional competencies. Located in Istanbul, a center of trade and culture, our campus provides students with a comfortable environment conducive to accessing relevant institutions and activities within their fields of interest.
The four-year educational program includes learning from specialized educators and design professionals to develop design methodologies, fostering active learning through inquiry-based approaches in practical courses, and acquiring knowledge on social, economic, ethical, environmental, and cultural factors influencing their professional domain in theoretical courses. The curriculum aims to cultivate an understanding of the interconnections between various disciplines rooted in these areas and to develop a global perspective.
Courses are complemented by projects based on sectoral or interdisciplinary collaboration, supported by project initiatives and student exchange programs under our international agreements. Graduates aim to possess a perspective capable of merging personal aesthetics with the needs of their target audience, integrating trend tracking, consumer analysis, and creative experiences to generate novel designs. Additionally, they are expected to comprehend the utilization of the latest opportunities in technology and digitalization in design and to grasp the creation of marketable collections.
Furthermore, students have the opportunity to specialize in textile design, which holds a significant position in the textile sector alongside garment design, through elective courses encompassing textile and craft practices. Our institution’s Anatolian Textiles mapping efforts aim to serve as a crucial source of inspiration and knowledge, providing project-based support to students.
Upon graduation, students may pursue careers as designers in the national and international textile industry, specializing in garments, weaving, and accessories. They may also engage in fashion consultancy and writing, participate in fashion branding and marketing processes, and explore opportunities for postgraduate education and academic research in related fields.
Exchange Opportunities:
BAU Textile and Fashion Design department has Erasmus exchange agreements with Saxion University, Fashion and Textile Technologies, University of Ljubljana, Planning Textiles and Clothing and Academy of Fine Arts of L’Aquila, Fashion and Costume departments which are allowing our students to experience an exchange opportunity for a semester or two.
