Introduction
The Sports and Recreation Ministry degree prepares the student to be an effective leader in the fields of sports ministry, recreation, and camping. Students are required to study in a variety of areas: the biological and social sciences, sports and recreation, health content, experiential education, developmental theory, and Christian ministry practices. The curriculum includes both content and process-oriented courses and emphasizes service-learning and field experience. All facets are integrated with Christian principles.
Program Outcome
OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the program, the student will meet the objectives of the division of Arts and Sciences, as well as additional objectives particular to this major.
Division Objectives: students shall be able to
- Articulate why for the Christian, all vocations to which God leads are calls to stewardship and ministry.
- Explain how a Christian worldview impacts vocational attitudes, ethics, and meaning.
- Articulate how biblical principles related to one’s chosen field integrate with or critique “secular” knowledge of the same field.
- Demonstrate the ability to construct a biblically informed approach to their vocational field.
- Demonstrate competence in their chosen field at a level appropriate for graduates of a baccalaureate program.
Specific Program Objectives: students will be able to
- Explain the nature, scope, and importance of health and recreation systems.
- Apply Biblical ethics and stewardship practices to sound health management principles.
- Describe the influence of recreation and health in individual, relational, social, and organizational systems.
- Describe the basics and nature of fitness leadership.
- Outline procedures for use of natural resources/environment and human behavior with an emphasis on the populations that outdoor leaders serve.
- Think critically and use diverse methods of understanding in evaluating recreation and management systems.
- Understand the benefits of leisure and recreation for the well-being of individuals and for the welfare of communities.
- Describe how leisure and recreation contribute to the diverse threads and the common fabric of society.
- Synthesize and apply the technical knowledge and skills required of recreation professionals, including the areas of planning, management, assessment, leadership, evaluation, and budget and finance.
- Meet the objectives of the Division of Bible and Ministry.
- Meet the objectives of the Division of General Studies.
