Introduction
Chemical engineering is a broad multi-disciplinary branch of engineering that combines the knowledge of mathematics and science – particularly chemistry, to develop engineering applications that span a wide range of industries, namely, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and construction, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, food processing, specialty chemicals, polymers, biotechnology, and environmental health and safety industries, among others. Students with a passion for chemistry and talent in math and problem solving typically do well in chemical engineering.
Chemical engineering research has created safer, more efficient methods of refining petroleum products, making energy and chemical sources more productive and cost-effective. They also develop solutions to environmental problems, such as pollution control and remediation.
Chemical engineers draw upon and apply their engineering knowledge to safely and economically solve any technical challenges they encounter. Specifically, chemical engineers are engaged at the forefront of R&D in order to improve food-processing techniques and methods of producing fertilizers, to increase the quantity and quality of available food. They construct the synthetic fibers that make our clothes more comfortable and water resistant. They develop methods to mass produce drugs, thus making them more affordable.
The chemical engineering program prepares students with a strong base of engineering knowledge, and helps develop problem-solving skills. Students learn to design and conduct experiments and interpret the outcomes. The program focuses on critical thinking, preparing graduates to identify and develop solutions for engineering challenges in real-life situations.

Mission
The Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering program at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) educates students to become qualified engineers who are capable of generating effective solutions by using engineering approaches in the field of Chemical Engineering. The graduates of the program will be well versed in technology and in social and environmental issues.
To fulfill this mission, the program provides the undergraduate student with a thorough foundation in the basic tenets of Chemical Engineering and technologies, and a broad introduction into chemistry, , engineering materials, thermal sciences, reaction and separation sciences, energy and environment protection and chemical systems. The program provides a strong background for graduate study in the diverse areas branching out of the Chemical Engineering field. The technical focus is complemented with topics in general education leading to a well-rounded member of the global society.
Program Educational Objectives
The Program Goals describe the expected accomplishments of graduates during their first few years after graduation. The program goals have been derived from and support the mission statement of the American University of Ras al Khaimah. The graduate of the Chemical Engineering Program is expected to be able to:
- Pursue a successful professional career in local and regional markets or higher studies in the field of chemical engineering.
- Conceive, design, model, analyze, test and implement chemical engineering systems and processes considering their environmental impact.
- Professionally apply mathematical, computational and experimental techniques in solving practical problems.
- Effectively communicate and function in various multidisciplinary environments and engage in life-long learning and professional development.
- Understand the ethical, cultural and environmental considerations of the engineering profession.
Student Outcomes
AURAK has adopted ABET’s a-k outcomes for Chemical Engineering Program. The outcomes for the program are:
- A thorough grounding in chemistry, physics, biology, math and engineering subjects such as fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, and reaction kinetics; and the ability to apply knowledge of these subjects in chemical engineering practice.
- An ability to design and conduct different chemical engineering experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
- An ability to analyze, design, and control a system, component and/or process dealing with fluid and solid handling, separation, and chemical/biochemical reactions to meet desired needs
- An ability to work and interact effectively in groups/teams which have diverse personalities, cultures, and backgrounds.
- Ability to identify, formulate, and solve chemical engineering problems
- An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
- Ability to develop effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to evaluate the potential risks, i.e. consequences and probabilities of engineering solutions which may affect society and the environment.
- A recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in independent-learning and life-long learning
- A knowledge of contemporary issues;
- An ability to use computer tools and software packages in the analysis, modeling, simulation, control and design of chemical engineering processes.
