Curriculum
First and second year (lower years): basis and exploration
In the first two years you become acquainted with different design approaches and do many experimental design assignments, teaching you how to come up with original concepts and translate your ideas into design. You will also develop a wide range of technical skills. We offer study trips and you will visit exhibitions and studios. In the second year you broaden and deepen your knowledge and form your own vision of the discipline.
Subjects you follow include: technical workshops, computer skills, thINK (art theory), philosophy, future makers research (design in collaboration with the Tactical Design professorship) and various design subjects including prototyping. From the beginning you will receive intensive academic career counselling.
Years 3 and 4 (upper years): specialisation and graduation
The second half of your studies centres on deepening your knowledge and personal professional profiling. You will have the space to develop your own work and hone your vision. You work on experimental projects in the field, often in collaboration with students from other ArtEZ art & design courses, and you will do an internship at a company or studio in the Netherlands or abroad. Instead of an internship, you can also opt for a study period abroad through the Erasmus+ exchange program. You immerse yourself further in the philosophy and take various design subjects. You write a dissertation, attend workshops from design studios and possibly go on a working visit to the Salone del Mobile design week in Milan, where work from our alumni is often on display as well.
You work on your final exam collection, organise its exhibition during the ArtEZ finals and prepare for the transition to the field or to a master course.
Program Outcome
After studying Product Design (higher professional education), you can continue your studies in a national or international master course, for example at the Royal College of Art in London, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London or Aalto University in Helsinki. More and more students are opting for a university master course in research, biodesign or engineering.
If you want to obtain a first-level teaching qualification, take the Tailor-Made Fine Art and Design in Education course at ArtEZ. This course is offered in both Zwolle and Arnhem.

Career Opportunities
ArtEZ’s Product Design course delivers product designers who are not only innovative and skilled, but also have the ability to think critically and ask other questions, and have the courage to come up with alternatives.
Our graduates are inquisitive and strong in interdisciplinary collaboration, daring to experiment but also able to implement. They stand on their own two feet, are flexible and have the backbone to start their own studio and take charge. These skills enable you to be meaningful in many different ways in the broad field of design.
