Biophysical chemistry uses physical science to understand complex biological systems. Our biophysical chemistry major is extremely multidisciplinary and designed for intensive hands-on learning. Students in this major will develop a solid foundation in chemistry and physics in order to explore the inner workings of biological systems. Our faculty is dedicated to engaging students outside the classroom in mentored research projects, and students are trained in the use of equipment and instrumentation found in top research laboratories.

With a BS in Biochemistry, you’ll be able to decode the “language of life,” a skill that can lead to a career in the pharmaceutical, chemical, or food industries. Your degree will demonstrate that you are prepared to advance in any number of career directions, from consumer products to medicine.

The newly-launched Biochemistry (B.S.)/Medicinal Chemistry (B.S.) dual degree helps students hone expertise in two complementary fields of study, leading to expanded career and educational possibilities. Graduates of this program will possess a strong knowledge of both the biomolecular processes and chemical reactions occurring in living organisms and systems, as well as an advanced understanding of drug design, drug synthesis, and pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis. The B.S. in Medicinal Chemistry is also the only program of its kind in Illinois, and one of just a handful in the country, making this dual degree a rare opportunity for a highly-customized education.

Biology: Molecular & Biochemistry is one of two Biology tracks. This track often leads students to careers in the health sciences (medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, physical therapy), microbiology, and immunology. Our comprehensive active-learning approach prepares students to pursue a variety of postgraduate studies. Some students enter careers immediately after graduation as teachers, laboratory technicians, and pharmaceutical sales representatives. Others go on to post-graduate studies in medical, dental, physician assistant, physical therapy, and pharmacy.

The Chemistry Department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry or Biochemistry as well as a minor in Chemistry. Students may also choose to double major in Biochemistry and Biology or Biochemistry and Chemistry. The department also provides advising and coursework for students interested in applying to pharmacy school.

Loras College Biochemistry program provides students the opportunity to develop a strong foundation in chemical principles and to apply their training in the lab. This foundation enables Biochemistry graduates to pursue a very wide range of options after graduation including graduate school or a chemistry-related field; going directly into the workforce for a career in the chemical industry, government, education, engineering, forensic science, or the law; or entering interdisciplinary fields such as medicine, dentistry, other health professions, education and more.

The biochemistry program at Binghamton University is a joint effort of the biological sciences and chemistry departments. Since biochemistry is primarily a laboratory science, the curriculum emphasizes modern laboratory techniques and encourages students to participate in independent biochemical laboratory research.

As a student in the NSU biochemistry program, you’ll receive the foundation and skills that will give you an edge and prepare you to succeed in in a host of well-established, continually evolving fields. Biochemistry merges the chemical, biological and physical sciences to explain biological processes on a molecular level, preparing you for immediate employment in medical, industrial, and government positions (scientists, lab technicians, research assistants, and chemists), a professional degree program (medical, dental, veterinary, pharmaceutical, genetic counseling, and other clinical or health professions), or a graduate degree program (biochemistry, chemistry, and biology).

Our Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology degree prepares students who wish to pursue advanced degrees in biotechnology, molecular biology, or medicine. The major consists of 24 semester hours of chemistry and 23 semester hours of biology coursework.
