As a bachelor’s student, you will study not only singing but also piano, vocal chamber music, expression techniques, music theory, aural skills, and music history, as well as pedagogy and languages. You can also choose to complete the required amount of pedagogical studies to fulfill the requirements for working as a teacher. Through your voice pedagogy studies, you will gain theoretical and practical insight into vocal lessons, vocal coaching methods, and vocal physiology. During teaching practice, you will get the chance to teach practice pupils under the supervision of a supervising teacher. You will develop your pedagogical vision by observing classes and working on your teaching portfolio.

You will gain the skills needed to work as a versatile percussion professional, both as a soloist and as an orchestra or chamber musician. You can also complete a large study module in pedagogical studies required for working as a teacher.

With organ as your major subject, you will focus on mastering your instrument and learning about improvisation, continuo playing, and the structure and history of the clavichord. Your studies will include ensemble playing and mastering the keyboard, as well as the history of organ music and organ pedagogy. As part of your bachelor’s degree, you will prepare a repertoire for the Level B performance examination in accordance with the degree requirements for organ as a major subject. In your keyboard instrument studies, you will reach at least Level C in piano, harpsichord, or clavichord.

The kantele program is multi-faceted and highly respected both by national and international standards. It has a unique mission in fostering and renewing kantele music and pedagogy. Kantele artists who have studied at the Sibelius Academy and achieved global success include Eva Alkula, Eija Kankaanranta, Kristi Mühling, and Hedi Viisma.

The core of the programme is weekly one-on-one instruction given by the best teachers in the field. Graduates of the programme have the skills to work as orchestra musicians, soloists, chamber musicians, or music teachers. You can also complete a larger study module in pedagogical studies required for working as a teacher.

We give you the chance to study guitar at the highest possible level and help you in your journey of becoming exactly the kind of artist that you aspire to be. You will also acquire the competence to work as a highly competent guitar teacher. Almost all of Finland’s most esteemed classical guitar players have completed their degrees at the Sibelius Academy.

You will gain an understanding of different musical styles and learn to work in different ensembles as well as in different types of roles as a musician. Mastery of your own instrument and performing in concerts is at the core of your studies. In addition to honing your solo repertoire, you will deepen your skills in ensemble playing in our own Baroque Orchestra and in different chamber music ensembles, for example.

The student’s personal aspirations, freedom of choice, and individual guidance are integral to studies in fine arts. Our teachers are distinguished visual artists and experts from Finland and abroad. You will be provided a workspace and an excellent opportunity to exhibit your art in public, thanks to the Academy’s active exhibition activities.

During your studies, you will receive the necessary knowledge and skills in African-American music, music culture, and performance practices to become a professional. Upon graduating, you may take on demanding roles as a musician, bandleader, composer&arranger, and pedagogue. Finnish jazz professionals such as Timo Lassy, Verneri Pohjola, Aki Rissanen, and Kalle Kalima are all alumni of the Sibelius Academy who have established themselves in the Finnish and international music scene. Jazz students complete studies in ensemble playing, aural skills, rhythm, and arrangement that support their major subject. Optional studies and possible minor subject studies are also included in the degree. The degree also includes language and music technology studies.

While instrument and ensemble studies are the core of bachelor’s studies, it is also vital that students acquire theoretical skills. The versatile course selection also includes studies in folk dance and instrument building, for example. You will delve into the essence of memorization-based musicianship, acquire skills in different forms of improvisation and learn how to use archives and other sources as material for songwriting that is inspired by research. You will acquire the skills needed to form your personal artistic vision and learn how to reflect on it orally and in writing.

As a student, you will complete studies and research projects in music technology and creative music performance. Music technology studies are divided into focus areas, which all offer different perspectives into working as an expert in music technology. The combination of studies and research in music technology and creative music performance is essential to the programme. We offer you a wide course selection and versatile study opportunities to choose from based on your personal interests. During your first three years, you will study the tools needed in music technology and apply them creatively in different kinds of music contexts.

Essential to music theory majors are skills in harmony and voice leading, music analysis and instrumentation, as well as instrument studies. As a bachelor’s student, you will also study aural skills and music history.

Already during your first year of studies, you will get to play as part of the full-scale Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra. You will also get the chance to take part in the chamber music activities of the Academy, join the Orchestra Academy at the Helsinki Music Centre, and cooperate with professional orchestras. The Academy regularly welcomes international top artists and pedagogues as guests. You can study cello as your main instrument. Chamber music, playing in an orchestra and high-level competence in one’s instrument is the core of the studies.
