This is one of several specialist routes available in our BA (Honours) in Social Sciences (Philosophy) degree. You'll study core modules in interdisciplinary social science and sociology, giving you a firm grounding in ideas central to the social sciences. This will be combined with discovering more about the ideas held by classic and contemporary philosophers and learning to think about the big questions of philosophy for yourself.

Philosophers search for knowledge and truth, exploring the fundamental nature of reality and some of the most important questions about the world around us such as what is the self? What is a just society? Is free will an illusion? And, does God exist? We will investigate the nature of power and authority, the meaning of citizenship and democracy, and the ideals of liberty and equality. Students will also learn about some of the most important political ideologies in the contemporary world, such as liberalism, conservatism, feminism, and socialism.

A degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) will develop your understanding of the contemporary world, including financial crises, human rights, environmentalism and cultural conflicts. PPE equips students with the skills and attributes required to be changemakers who, through making sense of the world, are well placed to take action to solve its problems. This course will introduce you to some of the most important topics in religion, philosophy, and ethics and give you a full understanding of their historical and contemporary contexts.

The BA in Philosophy and the Catholic Tradition allows students to encounter those outstanding figures in the history of philosophy who are also major figures in the history of Catholic thought. The course also presents the Catholic tradition of philosophy to students as a living, dynamic reality, in critical and constructive dialogue with the other philosophical traditions at work in our contemporary culture.
