Field of activity: engineering and technological surveys, design, construction, water intake and treatment facilities, pumping stations, water pipelines, water supply and drainage networks, and other hydraulic structures. Basic training allows you to engage in environmental protection and research work. There are engineering positions in this profile in almost all design organizations, industrial, transport and housing, and communal enterprises.
Water, along with air, is the cornerstone of life on Earth. Water is needed not only for a person's physical existence but also as a means of hygiene, as the most important component of any production cycle, as a means of extinguishing fires, as a means of growing food crops. It is not easy to imagine a field of human activity that can do without water.
Water consumption is fantastically high: Lake Baikal, with a water volume of over 22 thousand cubic kilometres (and each km3 is 1 billion tons of water), would be enough for humanity for a little more than four years! And that is not counting the hydropower resources used to generate electricity!
All technological operations for water supply and sewerage are carried out at special hydraulic structures: water intake, treatment, pumping stations, water conduits, collectors, the construction and operation carried out by graduates of the "Water supply and sewerage" profile. The curriculum of this profile includes about 50 disciplines. The most important disciplines: mathematics, physics, chemistry, water chemistry and microbiology, theoretical mechanics, fluid and gas mechanics, the resistance of materials, geodesy, geology, building materials, building structures, construction technology, construction management, natural and wastewater treatment, water intake structures, utilities, pumping stations, integrated use and protection of water resources, sanitary equipment of buildings, operation of water supply and sewerage facilities.
Graduates of the faculty in the field of "Water supply and sanitation" work:
in design and survey organizations;
in specialized construction and installation organizations for the construction of hydraulic structures;
in operating organizations, for example, on the railway: in distances and services of civil structures and water supply, in directorates for heat and water supply, in organizations such as "Gorvodokanal," "Oblvodokanal," "Housing and communal services";
in environmental organizations: city and regional committees and inspectorates for environmental protection, environmental protection departments at railway and industrial enterprises;
in research laboratories and institutes of a technological profile; in universities and technical schools (teacher).
at industrial enterprises: in the department of the chief power engineer;
in management companies of housing and communal services.
Water supply and sanitation is the most stable industry in the country. It practically does not concern either socio-political revolutions or economic crises. This is an objective reality: if the water supply stops, humanity's very life will stop.
