The specialty in Product Design, itinerary in Transportation Design is equivalent to a University Degree (240 ECTS). This course trains professionals capable of designing not only vehicles, but transport systems and accessories linked to the sector.
Transportation design or automotive design is a discipline that goes beyond car design; Transportation demands an adaptation and variety that responds to diverse needs, from motorcycles with urban uses, airplanes with an unimaginable interior design, to boats with an infinite variety of dimensions and technology that make them self-sufficient. Whatever the medium (land, water or air), the design to transport products or people requires a broad and transversal vision that adapts to current needs.
The training in this specialty of the IED Barcelona covers not only the latest techniques and technologies linked to the conception and styling of vehicles (cars / cars, motorcycles, planes, ships, etc.) but also contemplates the globality of solutions seeking to go further there and anticipating the needs that may arise in terms of transportation.
The four-year equivalent Specialties in Design, equivalent to University Degrees (240 ECTS), aim to transform passion, talent and creativity into knowledge and skills that allow future design professionals to develop their careers.
Automotive design is going through a profound process of change, today's cars are different from the cars of yesteryear, with an important incorporation of technology that radically transforms them; new feeding systems, new tools, applications, segmented uses, increasingly sophisticated interactions that lead the user to live a new experience and novel systems in the commercialization process.
This specialty teaches the student to design not only vehicles, but transportation systems and accessories linked to the sector. Train interior and exterior transport designers who know how to deal with commercial, psychological and social factors related to mobility.
The future designer learns to understand aspects such as the psychological and emotional mechanisms of consumers, citizens or users, together with the concept of transport, vehicle and the culture of the different reference targets. These studies facilitate participants to interpret the needs and expectations of citizens, while maintaining creativity, style, trends and the life cycle of the product.
The experience in this field, together with the collaboration of large companies working in the automotive sector, allows us to develop this particular theoretical and at the same time practical competence, typical of large transport designers. The methodology emphasizes the continuous comparison between theoretical and technical knowledge, and concrete applications based on the elaboration and development of projects of increasing difficulty.
In the first year of the course, transport design students work together with other specialties to generate a methodological base and a creative process. The center of creativity is the experience of the designer himself in what we call his own environment. During this year, the student becomes familiar with the materials, the tools, the necessary techniques and checks how the ideas take shape according to the criteria used and the means used.
The second year is focused on developing your creativity individually and you begin to study the tools of the specialty, such as: packaging, clay, Key sketch, Chartpaks marker, Alias and graphic communication.
In the second year, learning continues incorporating research methodologies, processes and tools that allow solving specific needs of people and companies, in a Close Environment. This methodology translates the future graduate into the understanding that his needs are not those of everyone and he learns to understand them and work to solve the specific needs of the projects that are presented to him. The technical level is increasing to consolidate the young designer's ability to express his ideas and control development. The student begins project collaborations with companies.
The third year is a great leap. Preparation for the professional world begins, with the incorporation of management subjects, greater project complexity as well as a greater demand for achieving results. The student is, at this point, trained to create from a good technical base and creative methodology. There is a demand for professional rigor and the implementation of profession codes that must allow their professional development. In this phase, the student faces the resolution of projects in Distant Environments, where he must use all his tools to solve projects for people with whom he has less ties (geographic, generational, cultural or economic), bringing his training closer to the reality that he will live in. exit IED Barcelona.
Right now, the student is working on projects with real briefs and challenges that come from companies.
In the fourth year, the student must show his aptitude to develop any of the professional roles to which he can aspire as a designer trained at IED Barcelona, under the content requirements set by the Ministry of Education and the Generalitat de Catalunya. The training at a technical level is complete and the designer faces the challenge of multidisciplinarity, long-term vision and services related to his specialty. We call it Complex Environment.
The student must prepare a portfolio with professional capacity, that shows his uniqueness as a creative and that opens the door to the world of work.
Finally, the young creative must show that he is already a potential professional through the resolution of a real challenge posed by a prestigious company , selected for the IED in a challenge of great dimensions; You must present both academically and to a real client who will assess your readiness to work in your own company or for someone else.
The course offers a training path that teaches the student to understand and anticipate the demands of the market, mediating with business intentions and translating them into a specific project that can be carried out industrially. It enhances the importance of the concept, in a degree to advance trends and consumption styles, thanks to the understanding of market demands and social needs.
It also provides knowledge of materials and production technologies in order to bring projects to reality. Beyond a theoretical understanding, the student's intervention is specified in technological, functional, ergonomic and specific behavior analyzes.
Materials research, 3D modeling / prototyping, interior and exterior designers of cars, motorcycles, boats, aeronautics, public transport, packaging, merchandising, color & trim, home accessories, street furniture, etc.
