Historical Development

The Faculty of Education, which is a pacesetter in terms of the quality of its academic staff, infrastructure, teacher education curriculum, and its disciplined students, was one of the three pioneer Faculties (Arts, Education, and Science) when the University was established in 1976.

The Faculty has grown by leaps and bounds from the initial two Departments (Teacher Education and Guidance and Management), to Nine (9) Departments today: Adult and Primary Education, Arts Education, Counsellor Education, Educational Management, Educational Technology, Health Promotion and Environmental Health Education, Human Kinetics Education, Science Education and Social Sciences Education.

The Faculty also has the Institute of Education and two other Units namely: Centre for Supportive Services for the Deaf, and the Educational Technology Centre. The Faculty has witnessed tremendous growth in terms of students’ enrolment, staff recruitment, programme diversification and general output. The Faculty has made a tremendous impact in the areas of teaching, learning, research, and service to the community.

Vision and Objectives of the Faculty

The main objectives of the Faculty of Education are:

  • To produce professionally well-qualified graduate teachers in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences as well as in Engineering Education.
  • To provide in-service opportunities for staff in educational institutions, Ministries of Education and related fields for the purpose of updating their skills and competencies.
  • To conduct researches into various educational problems and issues, thus helping to solve specific, educational and related problems in Nigeria, as well as contributing to knowledge in the area of educational theories and practices.
  • To train specific specialists in some fields of education in addition to the general objectives of training classroom teachers.
  • To contribute significantly through teaching and research to the eradication of illiteracy in Nigeria.
  • To serve the most immediate environment by means of refresher courses, in-service programmes, short-term programmes and part-time programmes.

The Faculty has achieved these objectives, especially in the last 31 years. These are exemplified in the production of quality teachers in all areas of school disciplines, the educational impact on our immediate environment, and research efforts which have been geared towards addressing the needs of the Nigerian society. For instance, the Institute of Education has served greatly in the provision of in-service training to teachers, the Educational Technology Centre has served the University diligently in the area of coverage and recording of academic and social events, and the Centre for Supportive Services for the Deaf has provided the enabling support for successful learning of the Deaf. Furthermore, the Faculty has provided seasoned coaches and referees for the sports’ development within the State and for the nation.

Adult and Primary Education

The Department of Teacher Education, established right from the inception of the University of Ilorin in 1976, was split into two in 1980. This led to the emergence of the Department of Educational Foundations and the Department of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology. A further restructuring of these two Departments led to the birth of the Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education in January 2005. The Bachelor of Education degree in Primary Education Studies was conceived, developed, proposed and processed for approval by the then Department of Educational Foundations.

Educational Technology Centre

Brief on The Educational Technology Centre (ETC) at the University of Ilorin provides a supportive environment for the evaluation and integration of educational technologies to enhance learning, teaching, research and community service. The Centre’s staffs provide assistance to Faculties and students in the review of existing print instructional materials, the development of new instructional materials, and the development of online, video or audio resources. The Centre also provides support for the University in the coverage of social events.

Department of Science Education

When the Faculty of Education was established as one of the pioneering Faculties of the University College, llorin in 1975, there was a Department of Education. At that time, the Department of Education offered degree programmes in Arts, Science, Guidance and Counselling and Educational Management. By the beginning of 1978/79 academic year, the Department of Education had expanded in students' population and in its degree offerings to justify a division of the existing degree programmes into three distinct departments.

Department of Educational Management

The Department was one of the foundation Departments with which the University commenced operation in 1976. It started with 4 foundations academic staff and 200 students. It also started by offering a 3- year course at first-degree level only. Its scope of academic programmes has widened to include 4 and 3 year First Degree programme. Masters Degree, Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Management (PGDEM) and Doctoral Degree.
