Program Description

Double degree from LUT and HEBUT, Bachelor of Science in Technology

Modern mechanical engineering is a combination of creative product development, design and modelling, efficient production, automation, robotics and the effective management of people and goods.

As a mechanical engineer, you can design and manufacture a variety of consumer goods as well as machinery and equipment needed in the industry.

Mechanical engineering studies give you a comprehensive overview of modern product design and production techniques. You will learn to utilise digital and virtual environments in design as well as take into account the principles of the entire product life cycle and circular economy. You will also understand business principles, marketing and customer needs in product development.

Mechanical engineering is for you if you are inventive, creative and passionate about developing solutions that promote sustainable development and the respect for natural resources.

The Bachelor's Programme in Mechanical Engineering is a unique, international double degree programme developed in cooperation with Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT) in China. Students admitted to the Bachelor's Programme in Mechanical Engineering at LUT University will receive a degree certificate from two universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of both universities. You will complete the entire degree in Lappeenranta, Finland.

After completing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, you can continue your studies directly in the Master's programmes at LUT in the field of mechanical engineering:

  • Industrial Design Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

Learning outcomes

The main themes of your studies are production technology, the design of demanding metal structures and robotic welding or the design of mechatronic equipment.

At the end of your studies, you will be able to build, measure and test a variety of sustainable technical solutions, both in practice and virtually.

You will gain a wide range of skills to lead people and things in an expert and managerial role in an international work environment. Additionally, you will learn how to start a product development-oriented business. You become familiar with leadership already during your undergraduate studies: leadership skills are practised through a learning by doing approach under the guidance of teachers and mentors. In M.Sc. studies, competence is deepened through the operating principles and methods of effective management.

This diverse training provides great preparation for the international labour market. The technology industry is Finland's most important export sector and the machinery and metal industry its largest industry. Successful products in the machinery and metal industries include cruise ships, marine and power plant engines, elevators, cranes and hoists, electric and hybrid cars, and state-of-the-art commercial machines.

LUT's mechanical engineering represents the cutting edge of the industry. At LUT, you have a unique opportunity to implement modern robotics-based automation applications. For example, an ongoing project is developing artificial intelligence for work machines. With the help of power calculation, the machine can predict the future. With this "consciousness", the machine is able to select and execute as smooth and appropriate movements as possible in its work.

Degree structure

The Bachelor's Programme in Mechanical Engineering is a three-year double degree programme. The programme is developed in cooperation with Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT) in China. The programme leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Technology, M.Sc. (Tech.), which is 180 ECTS credits.

The programme includes general, intermediate specialisation, minor, language and elective studies as well as a Bachelor's thesis at the end of the studies. You will complete the entire degree in Lappeenranta, Finland.

General studies (88 ECTS credits) include studies in mathematics, physics, engineering design, mechanics, materials, control systems and programming.

Intermediate specialisation studies (40 ECTS credits) focus on the topics in mechatronics, robotics, production engineering, FE analysis, machine design and manufacturing.

Options for minor studies (20 ECTS credits) include energy economics, sustainability science, Chinese business, culture and technology.

Language studies (19 ECTS credits) include Chinese, Finnish and English and are featured with the aim to increase intercultural communication abilities as well as employability in Finland, China and around the world.

In elective studies (3 ECTS credits), you can select any course at LUT.

Bachelor's thesis, 10 ECTS credits.

After completing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, you can continue your studies directly in the Master's programmes at LUT in the field of mechanical engineering, Industrial Design Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

Studies in this Bachelor's programme will give you a comprehensive overview of modern product design and production techniques. The main themes of your studies are production technology, welded metal structures and mechatronics. In a mechatronic device, motion-based functions are controlled by electronics and information technology. For example, bottle return machines in stores work this way.

Teaching is based on the basic foundations of science, i.e., mathematics and physics, which are applied to solve various technical problems. The computer-assisted learning environment is modern and emphasises creativity as well as innovation.

You will learn to understand the physical operating principles of machines, i.e. the use of energy, the strength of materials, to know different materials, the most modern production systems and manufacturing methods. You will understand how different mechanical systems and manufacturing methods work and how and where they are used.

You will also study information technology, sales and marketing of the products you have developed, and design and production management, and become familiar with starting and designing a company. You can supplement your studies with minor studies from other LUT degree programmes and with opportunities for part-time work.

At LUT University, the teaching of mechanical engineering is modern, international and multidisciplinary. In addition to traditional lectures, several courses will acquaint you with the phenomena of mechanical engineering in concrete laboratory exercises, and you will also be able to make virtual models to support the understanding of phenomena.

A key part of the studies takes place using virtual modelling software. You can test and compare the operation and manufacture of machines and equipment on a screen before they are actually manufactured.

With the help of assignments, you will get acquainted with the design of machines, products and structures as well as various manufacturing methods, such as welding, cutting and sheet metal work, and compression and thermoforming of various composite materials. You can also put your creativity into practice: students have designed and manufactured mountain cars and energy-powered electric vehicles, among other things.

Teaching increasingly emphasises leadership and teamwork skills, project-based work and communication skills. For example, project work courses solve industry problems, and you participate in university research projects in collaboration with students from different degree programmes. Working in such a project work environment gives you the ability to reflect on and understand things on a broad scale, make decisions and manage entities.

Career prospects

There is a great demand in the labour market for mechanical engineering experts.

Mechanical engineering degree opens the door to a wide range of tasks: you can work in the metal or automotive industries, for example, but also in industries related to food, healthcare, energy production, transport or climate change mitigation.

You can work in management and expert positions, as a design or production engineer, or in the development of consumer goods, machinery, equipment and their parts. With a Master's degree in mechanical engineering, one can also research and develop manufacturing methods and apply them to production.

Work may also involve training, research and marketing tasks, for example in industrial projects or in one's own company. Master's graduates in mechanical engineering have gone on to become:

  • heads of virtual design firms
  • design managers of international energy companies
  • production managers of pulp and paper plants
  • mechanical engineers
  • quality control managers in the metal industry
