Double degree from LUT and HEBUT, Bachelor of Science in Technology

Electricity plays a key role in mitigating global climate change. Renewable energy, the global revolution in energy production and the need to increase the efficiency of energy use provide electrical engineering professionals with jobs now and in the future.

Electrical engineering is for you if you are not afraid of challenges, you are interested in how things work and you look forward to being part of the energy transition. Interest in the natural sciences is also an important feature: in electrical engineering, you apply mathematics and physics to explore different phenomena. As an expert in electrical engineering, you will have a great opportunity to contribute to the technological revolution and an electronic future.

At LUT University, you will apply your skills to reform electronic society. With modern technology, for example, solar energy can be used to produce fuel, and people's well-being is promoted through various electronic applications. In addition, digitalisation and the Energy Internet bring new opportunities for utilising the electricity grid.

The Bachelor's Programme in Electrical Engineering is a unique, international double degree programme developed in cooperation with Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT) in China. Students admitted to the Bachelor's Programme in Electrical Engineering at LUT University will receive a degree certificate from two universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of both universities. You will complete the entire degree in Lappeenranta, Finland.

After completing the Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, you will have a direct study right to continue your studies in the Master's Programme in Electrical Engineering at LUT.

Learning outcomes

You will learn to understand how electrical energy is generated, how it is transmitted and used, how electrical systems are controlled, and how the electricity market works.

You will also learn to develop new electrotechnical equipment and systems.

Your studies will emphasise energy efficiency and the production and use of clean energy. This involves a deep understanding of emerging technologies such as smart grids, wind and solar energy, electrical machinery, automation and power electronics, among other things. You will develop an excellent understanding of the phenomena related to electricity and the operating principles of electrical engineering and electronics.

The emphases of the programme have been selected on the basis of the skills required in the working world. The programme stands out on a broad scale due to its close collaboration with other engineering degree programmes.

At the end of the programme, you will be able to use basic skills in mathematics and science and solve problems by applying suitable mathematical methods. You will be aware of the essential laws of physics and be able to apply them to various physical processes, understand physical phenomena and be able to solve problems related to them, describe simple dynamics systems using continuous-time differential equations and simulate them, and use digital solving environments in the practical applications of the methods.

You will understand the principle of feedback control and apply the basic methods of control engineering in devices and machines.

Guidelines and regulations of electrical safety will become familiar to you: you will learn about electrical installations and electromagnetic compatibility and act according to them in the case of an electrical accident.

Degree structure

The Bachelor's Programme in Electrical Engineering is a three-year double degree programme. The programme is developed in cooperation with Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT) in China. The programme leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Technology, M.Sc. (Tech.), which is 180 ECTS credits.

The programme includes general, intermediate specialisation, minor, language and elective studies as well as a Bachelor's thesis at the end of the studies. You will complete the entire degree in Lappeenranta, Finland.

General studies (79 ECTS credits) include studies in mathematics, physics, engineering design, mechanics, control systems, programming and electricity.

Intermediate specialisation studies (49 ECTS credits) focus on topics in power systems, electrical drives, electrical circuits, digital design, digital control, IoT, electronics and electrical safety.

Options for minor studies (20 ECTS credits) include energy economics; sustainability science; practical engineering; innovation and entrepreneurship; and Chinese business, culture and technology.

Language studies (19 ECTS credits) include Chinese, Finnish and English and are featured with the aim to increase intercultural communication abilities as well as employability in Finland, China and around the world.

In elective studies (3 ECTS credits), you can select any course at LUT.

Bachelor's thesis, 10 ECTS credits.

After completing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering programme, you can continue your studies directly in the Master's programme in Electrical Engineering at LUT.

In the programme, everything you do is based on mastering the basics of electrical engineering. Your studies will consist of much more than just lectures. Tutorials in small groups allow for flexible interaction between the teacher and students. Pair, group and seminar work also brings its own variation to the studies. In addition, the degree programme utilises many well-established and illustrative learning techniques, such as power exchange trading and company-based problem-solving tasks.

You can test theories in practice in state-of-the-art teaching laboratories. In laboratory exercises, you can measure basic electrical engineering parameters, such as voltage, current, power and resistance, and use various measuring instruments.

Project work is increasingly emphasised in teaching and often carried out in collaboration with other degree programmes. Projects have dealt with a number of issues, such as seeking ways to reduce emissions in the city of Lappeenranta and designed and built equipment, including a portable audio device for party use. You can also select project topics related to your own interests.

The diversity of the Bachelor's studies is also increased by the opportunity to work as a research assistant in research projects of the Electrical Engineering department. In addition to a salary, you will gain valuable professional experience and a feel for scientific research.

Career prospects

Emerging energy systems, energy-efficient technology, smart grids, electrifying transport and the electricity market guarantee graduates of electrical engineering work now and in the future.

New experts are needed for product development, project engineering, sales and marketing, and management positions. Your job responsibilities may include, for example, the design, product development, technical sales or production management of electrotechnical equipment and its production.

There is also a growing need in the market for electrical trading engineers and electrical work managers. As private solar and wind power plants become more common, power plants are also experiencing a time of change. Thus, graduates of electrical engineering will have enough work in both industry and municipal positions.

Master's graduates in electrical engineering have gone on to become:

  • upper-level management in the electricity sector
  • testing engineers
  • automation engineers
  • electricity grid designers for distribution companies
  • production development managers for electronics companies
  • managing directors of electricity companies
  • design engineers

How to Apply

The next application period is 7 January − 20 January 2021 at 15:00 (UTC+2).

There are 2 different paths to follow when applying:

  • Applying with an SAT Test
    Holders of any other comparable qualification on the upper secondary level of education providing you with eligibility to University-level Bachelor's studies in the country where the degree was completed in.
    No language test required.
  • Applying with Finnish Matriculation Examination or related results
    Holders of Finnish Matriculation Examination, International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate or Reifeprüfung.
    Language Test required with a few exceptions to the rule.

Lappeenranta campus

LUT University's Lappeenranta campus is located in the district of Skinnarila, seven kilometres from the city centre. The compact campus area is located by the beautiful lake Saimaa and offers LUT students all of the student services needed.

Most student apartments are located within walking distance, and the university premises offer everything from laboratories to library services, restaurants to health care – literally under one roof.
