Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences: Game Design and Development Degree This Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences degree will equip students with the necessary skills to pursue a career in creating gaming content for everything from home consoles and computers, to emerging platforms like mobile phones and other hand held devices. A graduate will be qualified for a career in business - as a developer for gamification applications, business applications and mobile apps. This industry-focused 3-year qualification provides students with the knowledge and experience that they will need to create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional games. Students will examine various factors relevant to the computer games industry whilst gaining a broad understanding of the entire computer game development supply chain. Students graduate with an industry ready portfolio in game design and development exhibited at the annual student showcase, and followed by an internship. The programme is contextualised within brand building, affording students the opportunity to integrate their gaming concepts with a brand building slant, giving a unique approach to game design and development. In second and third year students participate in brand challenges collaborating in multi-disciplinary teams to solve real-world problems. By third year students are able to groom their interest in either game design or game development through selecting discipline relevant projects, creating unique portfolios. By the end of the third year, a student will have the ability to conceptualise, design, develop and implement their own games, creating a potentially lucrative entrepreneurial opportunity. Students will need to invest in a PC laptop with the necessary software. Requirements are available from a Vega Contact Navigator. Entry requirements A NSC with Degree admission- A minimum of 30 % for English coupled with a minimum of 50% for four x DESIGNATED NSC subjects (This excludes LO which is a 10 credit subject but includes English); OR A NC(V) with Degree admission – A minimum of 60 % in English on either First Additional Language or Home Language level AND Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy AND Life Orientation , with a minimum of 70% in one of the four vocational subjects is required; OR A SC (with endorsement) or equivalent; OR Alternatively a Higher Certificate, an Advanced Certificate, 240 or 360 credit Diploma and an Advanced Diploma in a cognate field may satisfy the minimum admission requirements to degree studies ​​​If a Higher Certificate, Advanced Certificate, 240 or 360 credit Diploma or Advanced Diploma is not in a cognate field, then at least 20 % of the credits of such qualification must relate to academic literacy or academic skills in order for an applicant to be admitted to degree studies. Such applications will be reviewed by the relevant HoF at The IIE CAT in collaboration with the Registrar. ​​​NSC: students are required to have Mathematics at least at level 4 or Mathematical Literacy at level 7. For those not meeting the requirements as set out above, a minimum of an intermediate level (38 or above) in the NBT QL- AQL assessment is required. ​​​General requirements for undergraduate degrees: All applicants for The IIE undergraduate degree studies, including international students, are required to write the Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) – National Benchmark Test (NBT), unless they have attained the age of 23 by the time they register. The AQL – NBT is used for placement in student support programmes and does not replace the admission requirements for a specific degree programme. Applicants who achieve a score lower than 64% are required to register for and successfully complete the two Academic Literacy, Introduction to Scholarship modules (ITSA and ITSB). Applicants who do not write the AQL - NBT prior to admission will automatically be registered for ITSA and ITSB whether or not these are credit bearing modules in their qualifications. These candidates may, on provision of an AQL - NBT score of 64% or above, be exempted from one or both the modules if and only if these are not credit bearing modules in their qualifications. For candidates who are completing the modules as a result of the low AQL - NBT score or who did not provide an AQL - NBT score, successful completion of ITSA and ITSB is a pre-requisite for registering for any third year modules and thus any student who has not completed ITSA or ITSB in their first year of study will be required to do so in their second year. Where ITSA or ITSB is credit bearing in the qualification concerned, successful completion of one or both (depending on the curriculum structure) is also a graduation requirement.​ [-]

Bachelor of Creative Arts (Game Design)

In the final trimesters of study, students learn a number of sophisticated skills including character rigging, intricate application scripting for games engines and motion capture for real-time games animation and cinematics. These skills are geared towards the final project which begins with the formation of teams, the generation of ideas and a thorough work-up of the games design process. In the final trimester of studio development, teams spend time producing their game concept in a process designed to emulate a real-world game production. With lecturers acting as Executive Producers, students incorporate knowledge developed thus far to produce a fully-interactive game world. These worlds may be suited for use as either a prototype of a possible larger production, or a complete smaller-scale independent games project. Finally, students are supported in developing their games art show reels and skills for finding suitable employment as they transition into the professional workplace.
