Special Effects for Film & Television - BDes (Hons) This programme is for students who wish to combine design creativity, physical model making skills and cutting edge 2 and 3D computer modelling and prototyping in the creation of a variety of special effects for film, television and theatre. It offers a wide spectrum of opportunities in model design work, ranging from the highly accurate engineering approach of the product modeller, to the imaginative and inventive solutions of special effects designers/animators in advertising, film and TV. Although this programme focuses on the creation and use of physical assets, any modern large scale film or TV production will utilise both physical and digital effects. While you will specialise in your chosen area you will work across fields so that you develop an understanding of the overall production workflow and your contribution to it. You will be taught through lectures, seminars and tutorials and a great deal of the teaching underpins academic theory as applied to real-life practical scenarios. Special features The programme uses its strong industry links to great effect by bringing in guest speakers from industry, demonstrations of materials and processes from relevant companies, visits to trade events and the opportunity to be involved with graduate recruitment events. You will benefit from our pyrotechnical, make-up and animatronics design expertise and be able to study specialist modules in these areas. What you will learn The programme is made up of modules covering various aspects of designing and making models/sets and the use of digital compositing, animation and CG to create visual effects to be used in scenes within film, TV and commercials. Most of the coursework is project-based, and structured to simulate professional situations as much as possible. Starting with more directed, skills-based work, the student progresses to have increasing control over their own studies, ultimately proposing creative work which reflects their own strengths and interests. As well as developing visual ideas and practical skills, special effects artists have to be able to communicate verbally, and to be able to analyse and synthesise ideas in words. They have to be able to take an idea from a brief or script scene and analyse the most efficient way to execute the process in turning this vision into reality whether using live action practical effects or digital visual effects. Consequently, the programme includes an element of research, discussion, verbal presentation and written work. The AQL – NBT is used for placement in student support programmes and does not replace the admission requirements for a specific degree programme. Applicants who achieve a score lower than 64% are required to register for and successfully complete the two Academic Literacy, Introduction to Scholarship modules (ITSA and ITSB). Applicants who do not write the AQL - NBT prior to admission will automatically be registered for ITSA and ITSB whether or not these are credit bearing modules in their qualifications. These candidates may, on provision of an AQL - NBT score of 64% or above, be exempted from one or both the modules if and only if these are not credit bearing modules in their qualifications. For candidates who are completing the modules as a result of the low AQL - NBT score or who did not provide an AQL - NBT score, successful completion of ITSA and ITSB is a pre-requisite for registering for any third year modules and thus any student who has not completed ITSA or ITSB in their first year of study will be required to do so in their second year.
