The education department at MUM offers two undergraduate programs—one in secondary teacher licensure and the other in educational foundations. [+]

Bachelors 2017 in Iowa USA. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The education department at MUM offers two undergraduate programs—one in secondary teacher licensure and the other in educational foundations. The secondary licensure program leads to an Iowa license to teach high school math, science, language arts, or art. The foundations program prepares students who do not plan to become classroom teachers to work in other educational settings or pursue graduate work. The main aim of both programs is to address a deep and widespread problem in education: that education does not engage and motivate students because it does not connect to their inner lives. The solution that we offer is an approach to education whereby students first gain knowledge of consciousness, and then learn all subjects in connection with that. Through this approach, all learning can be seen as related to oneself and as a result becomes meaningful, useful, and life-supporting. This central aim of both programs is achieved through four themes: Challenge, Consciousness, Creativity, and Community Challenge Students master standards in fourteen areas, including historical and philosophical foundations, learning theory, classroom management, assessment, curriculum development, teaching methods, student differences, and effective communication. Consciousness Through their coursework and associated practicums, students learn the principles and practices of Consciousness-Based Education, a rich and systematic approach that connects all teaching and learning to the students’ full development of consciousness. Creativity Students learn creative and innovative practices in schools and classrooms that can be integrated with Consciousness-Based Education to create new and better schools. Community When students come to MUM they enter a community of growth-oriented individuals strongly focused on progress. [-]

Art majors are guided in small classes by practicing artists who are experienced teachers. [+]

Art majors are guided in small classes by practicing artists who are experienced teachers. They learn to express their creativity in diverse media including painting, drawing, ceramics, photography, installation, sculpture, screen printing, and digital media. Art students also gain the inspiration of great works of art from many eras and cultures in art history classes, and learn to appreciate art as an expression of consciousness, their own Self. The BA program cultivates creativity, perception, and problem-solving, abilities which are valuable throughout life. For students who aspire to a career in the arts, we recommend the BFA program. BA Program Assessment Every year a Visiting Evaluator assesses our students’ performance on the objectives listed below. Here are some comments from Evaluators: “Your students are awake, enlivened and engaged.” “The student work, both academic and creative, reflected a general sense of student well being…” “The strengths are knowledgeable, experienced teachers with an eye to the big picture…” “Your strengths are a dedicated and hardworking faculty, the rich committed environment and attitudes of your students, and the spiritual grounding you have given your students.” These outcomes are cultivated throughout the art curriculum and are strongly developed in the courses listed under each section. Bachelors 2017 in Iowa USA. MUM established the first four-year Sustainable Living degree program in 2003, and is a leader in the field. This new academic discipline is now being pioneered at MUM and an increasing number of other institutions around the world. Our teaching team includes nationally recognized experts in sustainability. Our Sustainable Living Center is off grid for water and waste water treatment, annually generates more energy than it uses, and meets 95% of the criteria for LEED Platinum, the Living Building Challenge, and Building Biology. It also features compact earth blocks in the walls, day lighting in all rooms, and whole trees that support the roof. It is truly a sustainable “building that teaches.” Five areas of concentration are offered according to student demand: Agriculture, Sustainability and the Built Environment, Applied Soil Ecology, Social Changemaker, and Energy. B.A. in Sustainable Living This 4-year degree prepares students for careers in sustainable community development and environmental coordination, or further study and research. Students interested in receiving a B.A. in Sustainable Living must complete at least 56 credits worth of courses from our program. SPECIAL FEATURES Hands-on projects during and after class that make abstract concepts learned in class concrete. For example, in addition to learning the theory of how wind generators work, our students have designed and built three generations of wind generators from scratch. We’ve worked to build a regional food system. And our faculty and students have played key roles in Mayor Ed Malloy’s strategic plan for sustainability in Fairfield. One Course at a time – The Block System — our students are fully immersed in one course each month, and then move on to the next course. The block system is immensely popular with our students because they learn more, and it eliminates the stress of taking 4 or 5 subjects at once. Internships – Students can earn up to 16 credits of internships that provide on-the-job training. In some cases, internships provide a stipend or cover expenses. We work to maintain relationships for local, regional, national, and international internship opportunities. Examples include sustainable agriculture, the building trades, environmental organizations, green business, and many other venues that provide practical experience in selected areas of interest. Certifications – We offer academic credit for successful completion of professional certifications in sustainability. From time to time we offer certifications as part of our program. Professional certification requirements are constantly changing and our in-program offerings also change as conditions in the broader community evolve. Certification offerings have included Building Biology and Permaculture Design, as well as Resnet Energy Rater Training and AutoCADD.
