Through industrial training, small projects in various courses, and the graduation project, our department presents flexibility for students to concentrate on the special areas they are willing to study. Our curriculum is focused on Information Systems Engineering, Production Engineering and Operations Research. Globalization of the world economy has been increasing customer expectations, creating demand for goods and services with better quality at affordable prices. Hence, manufacturing and service companies have started to seek for human resources with engineering and managerial skills. Industrial Engineering, as a discipline emerging from this point of view, contributes to production and service systems using analytical problem solving techniques, information technologies, and certain social sciences. In the frame of these references, Industrial Engineering’s scope of research and education is to search the ways of increasing quality and productivity by using scarce resources effectively. So, it provides opportunities for good positions in manufacturing industries, health services, communication, food sector, education, logistics, banks, consulting firms, public firms, even even planning parts of social projects. The undergraduate program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education, integrating a practical, hands-on experience. This emphasis on the practical componant of the program is to ensure that students are receptive and able to adapt to the new evolving trends in technology.
The courses, which are delivered, are all at the foreground of their fields and include such areas as energy systems, electronics, communications, antennaes and microwave techniques, control systems and signal processing. From the sixth semester onwards, students select elective courses specializing in their particular area of interest. This gives students the opportunity and time to make an informed choice as to their specializiation area. The innovative programs offered by the Department aim to prepare students to become highly qualified professionals needed in industry, government, and academia. The department of Computer Engineering was establihed in 1993 at the Faculty of Engineering. A four-year Computer Engineering program based on practice-oriented curriulum is offered. The undergraduate curricula are designed to enable graduades to identify, formulate, and solve problems using engineering principles. The practice-oriented programs encourage students to work on real world problems and gain some work experience. Furthermore it is expected that these programs supported with modern computer laboratories and advanced foreign language teaching facilities provide significant advantages for our graduates to work within a global economy and within a competitive environment. Apart from the fundemental courses such as calculus and physics the enginering courses included in the curricilum are logic design, microproccessors, computer architecture, programming languages, discrete structures, databases, operating systems, computer networks and comoputer graphics. The Faculty of Architecture has two departments, namely that of Architecture and İnterior Architecture and Environmental Design. These have a total of 450 students comprising about 10% of the university student population. We aim at educating students who have a good knowledge of implementation and the construction market, good acquintance of contemporary materials and detailing and developed creative design capacity. With these in mind, we invite professionals of all kinds to participate in our education and actiivities. There are currently as many visiting lecturers as the permenant staff, but this is to decrease gradually down to 20-30 % in the future. By inviting professionals we aim at uniting theory with practice. In addition, at all times, between 10 to 20% of our academic staff is composed of foreign nationalities. Knowing that love of a profession is the key for success, each academic year we engage in many diverse social and academic activities. Some of these are carried from the local up to the national and international scale. The faculty desires to further develop it’s international relations and this is clearly stated among its development goals and objectives. The Faculty, in parallel to the aims of the University, also serves the city of İzmir and it’s region. We collaborate with several municipalities and government offices in preparing projects and research. These also help increase the experience of our staff and students. We are conscious that good professional knowledge does not suffice and that students will need entrepreneurial skills in order to succeed, when they face market realities in the future. The Faculty, therefore, spends considerable effort in educating its students in this direction. Evidently, all students need to have ability to use computers efficiently. Although a certain number of courses are given in our two departments, all cannot be taught for obvious reasons. We also wish that each one of our students develop his/her freehand drawing capacity. We realise that this slowly disappearing skill needs to be protected preciously and futher developed.
