A Bachelor in Special Education prepares teachers to practice inclusive education for individuals with disabilities. Participants in the degree program learn teaching methods to educate and develop students with physical and learning disabilities who require specialized support to receive an education.

What is a Bachelor in Special Education? This undergraduate degree provides students with a framework of empowerment, advocacy, behavior and education methods to teach and support individuals with disabilities. Special education coursework extensively covers the skills and understanding necessary to work with special needs students in a classroom or social services setting. Participants study the physical and mental disabilities that require special education and their influence on learning and development. They leave the program capable of successfully working with and educating people with diverse needs. Students may choose to concentrate their coursework on their areas of interest, such as assessment methods or disability specialization, in order to tailor their career paths after graduation.

Students benefit from the special education program’s foundation of special needs instruction combined with the option to focus on an area of interest. Graduates are prepared for a career in inclusive education with an understanding of special needs students, a peer support network in place and the skills to fill an important role in the school system and community.

Special education degree programs usually take four years to complete. Tuition rates vary across institutions. Prospective students should inquire with each institution to get a clear vision of the cost in time and tuition required to complete the program.

Special education graduates are prepared for a career teaching and supporting students with a diverse range of learning needs. Program graduates may spend a career educating and developing children in a classroom setting, or they may choose to work in other capacities. A special education degree qualifies graduates to work in assessment and advocacy in school settings or in the community.
