Anthropology studies the diversity of human life in every part of the world. Long-term ethnographic fieldwork is the hallmark of the anthropological approach to studying the human condition and allows you to see how your world fits into a larger context. Contemporary anthropology examines the material, social, and cultural conditions of human behaviour and life from a “locally global” perspective. Anthropology will expose you to a variety of different cultures. At the same time, you will learn to examine your own life from an anthropological perspective. You will learn how to explore and understand radically different contexts in both your own and other cultures.

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Building Conservation) (Honours) program, within the Algonquin College Heritage Institute, prepares you for a career as a specialized professional promoting the understanding, stewardship, and sustainability of our built environment and cultural heritage resources, while reflecting on the knowledge, skills, and techniques of the crafts and tradespeople who created them.

At Carleton, you can structure your BA according to what you want to achieve. You can pursue an intensive four-year Honors degree or a three-year General program. You can choose a minor subject to complement your major subject and you can, in certain cases, pursue a concentration or a specialization—a set of courses directed towards a designated area of expertise, such as African studies, anthropology, linguistics, etc.

The Bachelor of Early Learning and Community Development (Honours) program prepares you to work with children and families in both the community development and educational sectors and provides you with a variety of transferable skills. There is an increasing awareness of the importance of early learning in our society. Similarly, there is an ongoing need to develop and support early learning opportunities for children and their families within a variety of settings.

All our majors commence upon completion of our Foundation Year requirements.

In the Indigenous Visual Culture program, you will be inspired to learn from the creative traditions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit art and design practices. The program includes studio-based courses where you make your own art and design. It also includes studying the visual, cultural, social, and political history of Indigenous peoples. This unique program develops Indigenous and Non-Indigenous students’ knowledge of Indigenous cultural and artistic practices, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, installation, and digital media. Students in the program receive academic, cultural, social, and wellness support through the Indigenous Visual Culture Student Center. Students in the program are creative, innovative, and curious and have many different skills and interests. Most have storytelling instincts and strong imaginations. Some have a drawing and painting ability or dance experience, some are DJs or VJs with an interest in communication. Many have well-developed visual-spatial skills and are interested in screens, games or performance, digital media production, or computer programming. At the end of this four-year program, you will earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Carleton’s Bachelor of Global and International Studies (BGInS) program takes advantage of Carleton’s strengths and location to provide undergraduate education in global and international issues that can give you an advantage in today’s job market, such as global development, global inequalities, and social change, global politics, etc.

As a student in the Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management program (BPAPM), you will examine a wide variety of issues facing society today, as well as institutional challenges, and develop the necessary skills and knowledge to address them.

Carleton’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) is a four-year Honours degree that places a strong emphasis on the interactions between people and their environments. The BSW program combines a liberal arts education with professional social work education. In your first year, you will take a range of courses outside of social work and two social work courses that will introduce you to the profession of social work and the programs and policies of the state.

We need only look around us to see the negative impact of human conflict on an international and national scale, as well as within our own communities. The program seeks to understand the reasons for confrontation and violence on all levels and, by understanding, to find ways to transform or prevent destructive conflicts.
