Bachelor Programs in Philosophy in Canada 2021

Building on McMaster’s internationally-recognized expertise in legal philosophy and constitutional law, Humanities has introduced an exciting new honors program. -

The Bachelor of Philosophy is a four-year program. Students completing this degree are expected to be highly qualified candidates for graduate studies in Philosophy. The program is designed to progressively acquaint students with the fundamental problems that are debated within Western philosophical thought, to introduce them to the concepts and techniques proper to philosophical thinking, and to develop skills necessary for rigorous, critical, and independent thought. Particular attention is given to developing advanced knowledge of major philosophical movements, issues, and philosophical systems of the ancient world, Middle Ages, early modern period, and modern period, as well as current philosophical movements and main issues in metaphysics and in the theory of knowledge. Students pursuing a bachelor's in philosophy will also acquire the ability to write extended research papers on philosophical authors and themes, and construct a personal research program in view of graduate studies in Philosophy. The program includes a Final Oral Comprehensive Examination as a capstone experience. -

Philosophy is used to clarify and interpret important concepts such as truth, God, mortality, beauty, knowledge, and reality. These concepts play an important role in our self-understanding and our interpretation of the world. -

The Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Philosophy is a three-year program intended for those who wish to acquire a broad philosophical culture and an understanding of concepts and structures of thought that will help them in their career, whatever their field of expertise. The core requirements for this program are designed to foster critical thinking, to provide the students with an understanding of main philosophical doctrines and arguments of the central figures of the history of philosophy, as well as a good level of knowledge of the formal techniques of evaluating arguments. The first year is of special interest to students who want to further their general education before choosing a specific discipline, such as law, journalism, or management studies, and pursue their career at other universities. -
