Musical Materials Courses These courses concern the sound materials that are used to construct musical works, theirorganization into systems, and their interrelationships, which give rise to musical significance. Students are expected to recognize and reproduce the basic elements both in sound and in notation, both in isolation and in complete musical contexts. Musical Styles Courses These are courses that concern musical style; its historic progression through different times, places, and cultures; and specific composers and works that contributed to that progression. Students are expected to recognize by sound and sight the ways in which musical elements are combined as compositional conventions: within a particular work, within the output of a composer, and by different composers in a particular time or place. Music Performance Courses The courses focus on performance, the actual production of music in sound. Students are expected to apply the physical requirements of playing different instruments to the elements of the score and to interpretative decisions, as the potential of notation becomes the reality of sounded music. Students learn repertoire for soloists individually in applied lessons and repertoire for groups of performers in ensembles. Application process is now open Bachelor in Stage Management and Technical Theatre Degree This three-year honours degree, offered for the first time in 2017 subject to academic approval, will replace the existing two-year Professional Diploma in Stage Management and Technical Theatre which has been offered by The Lir Academy since 2012. This new degree course will continue to offer practice based training to students who are interested in a career in professional theatre, TV and film. It has been enhanced to provide increased opportunities in specialist areas within stage management and technical theatre (e.g. sound, lighting and construction), increased professional placements and a major research project relevant to a student’s choice of specialism. Classes on production management, design (set, lighting, costume and sound) and managing your own freelance business will also be introduced during the final year. Year one - Introduction Year one is designed to introduce students to practice based training in all technical departments including lighting, sound, prop making, scenic art, costume, set construction and stage management. Core skills based classes in theatre skills, theatre technologies and theatre studies will be complemented by practice based learning on in-house productions. Year two - Application Year two will see students apply the skills learned from their first year to a series of theatre and film productions, directed and designed by professional practitioners. Each student will have the opportunity to become a head of department and work alongside their peers to deliver a full production. Year Three - Advanced In year three students will undertake work placements with prominent theatre companies, festivals and industry related companies in order to further develop their chosen area of specialism. Research projects will be assigned according to the preferred career choice of each individual student. These projects can be theoretical or practical in nature, for example designing the sound, making the scenic art or making props for a theatre production. Students will be encouraged to keep a journal of reflective practices throughout their final year. The practical training during the degree course will be complemented with a range of classes including theatre history, principles of stage management and principles of theatre technology. Led by dedicated and experienced theatre technicians and stage managers these classes will reflect best practices in professional theatre. Academic approval is expected to be confirmed in January/February 2017. In the unlikely event of a significant delay, the course will continue to be offered as a two year professional diploma in stage management and technical theatre in 2017. Applicants will receive confirmation of the approval of degree status as soon as the process is complete. Application Requirements Please note: The Bachelor in Stage Management and Technical Theatre Degree is not part of the CAO point’s race. Students are expected to have achieved the minimum matriculation requirements for Trinity College Dublin courses, however, exceptions may be made based on the demonstration of exception natural talent at auditions and interviews. Year One First year involves students working on The Lir productions as crew, as well as hands on training and class work. This is designed to give a broad grounding in theatre skills. Through skills-based training, the course will provide students with the proficiency to take a head of department role in a theatre production in their second year. Year Two The aim of the second year of the course is to enable students to apply skills acquired in their first year to a series of theatre productions, directed and designed by professional theatre practitioners. Students will work on five productions throughout the year in a variety of roles. Two of these roles will be from the stage management options, one from technical options and the other two will be chosen in consultation with the Technical Director. In consultation with the course convenor students will also undertake a 4 to 6 week placement with a professional theatre, organisation, theatre company or practitioner. Core practical and theoretical skills for the professional musician. The first two years of the degree revolve around each student’s?Primary Study (or principle instrument), which includes 4 hours of weekly instruction: 1 hour individual instruction, 1 hour group instruction, and 2 hours of ensemble instruction.
