The country has recently converted their own titles into the bachelor/master system. There are two types of universities: Academic (focussing more on theoretical knowledge, aka "Universiteit") or Applied Sciences (focussing more on practical knowledge, aka "Hogeschool")

Our Jazz Programme ‘New York Comes to Groningen’ is unique in the world for two reasons: 1 Fifteen top New York artists travel to Groningen on a rotating schedule. Each week of the year one of them is teaching Monday through Friday. 2 All students (Bachelor and Master) work with all of the NY-artists, irrespective of the student’s instrument. You start performing publicly from day one. The emphasis is on expanding your stage experience. You will also learn to play the piano in order to understand musical theory better. You will participate in studio projects and you will follow courses in jazz arranging and composition. Your main instrument is the focal point throughout your studies. The first year is mainly an orientation year. You will be attending theoretical classes, as well as taking main instrument classes and learning through practical training and projects. In the second year your knowledge and skills will be broadened and deepened, in both practical and theoretical subjects. You will be studying the foundations of musical entrepreneurship and teaching. In the third and fourth year a lot of time is invested in didactical subjects with a focus on work placements (internal, external and project internships). You can make your own choice in terms of optional modules, that fit your interest or capabilities. You may participate in an international exchange programme.
