Jazz: www.hanzegroningen.eu/pcc The Prince Claus Conservatoire of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen feels a strong connection to the northern part of the Netherlands. We are an internationally renowned institute with high standards regarding quality and atmosphere. Our mission is to train inspiring musicians who can make a difference in our society. We live up to our motto “Share your talent. Move the world” by challenging you to share your talent and passion for music with the world around you. As a future musician or music teacher you will move the world; by inspiring, motivating and touching people’s hearts. Studying at the Prince Claus Conservatoire means that you will be immersed in an inspiring international environment. We are known internationally for our innovative ideas on studying music. We are convinced that having close contact with our students is of great importance, you are not anonymous when you choose to study with us. We have gained the title Best Conservatoire of the Netherlands a number of times. Welcome to Groningen! Joris Teepe and his colleagues are a faculty of seasoned professional musicians who have played with many of the greatest musicians in jazz. They are part of the rich musical community of New York City, the city that is the centre of the jazz world. This life experience and commitment directly effects how they teach; the 'New York comes to Groningen' program is a more pragmatic, performanceoriented way of studying jazz than what is often taught at other conservatoires. This means that when you enter the conservatoire, you will be performing from the first day. The theory that you study is applied to real playing situations, and in general classes are focussed on making you ready to play jazz on the highest professional level. Piano study, lessons in arranging and compositions all find quick applications in studio projects and student performances. Programme outline You start performing publicly from day one. The emphasis is on theory, although this relates to how you can apply this during performances. You will also learn to play the piano in order to understand the theory. You participate in studio projects and you will follow courses in jazz arranging and composition. Your main instrument and the New York faculty classes are the focus throughout your entire study programme. In addition to your private lessons, you play in ensembles (Jazz, Fusion, Latin, Big Band and Soul Band). We organise a trip to New York every year. The didactical subjects and musical entrepreneurship are offered in the second and third year during which work placements play a major role. At the end of the fourth year you will complete your studies with a final concert, displaying the musical vision that you have developed. After graduation Since you are trained to be a professional musician you are equipped to start a career, performing in various ensembles and in all styles of jazz. You know how to promote yourself and your group; you compose and arrange music for all kinds of ensembles and orchestras. You start teaching others at a music school or privately. Most graduates are self-employed, pursuing ‘portfolio careers’ that combine performance with teaching. [-]

In the third and fourth year a lot of time is invested in didactical subjects with a focus on work placements (internal, external and project internships). You can make your own choice in terms of optional modules, that fit your interest or capabilities. You may participate in an international exchange programme.
