Minimum Credits: 120 Minimum ECTS Credits: 240 Profile of the Programme: Our BMus degree provides our students with four categories of professional skills, all of which are necessary for a successful career in any area of music. 1. Core practical and theoretical skills for the professional musician. The first two years of the degree revolve around each student’s?Primary Study (or principle instrument), which includes 4 hours of weekly instruction: 1 hour individual instruction, 1 hour group instruction, and 2 hours of ensemble instruction. Parallel to this intensive study on their primary instruments, our students receive professional training in keyboard and aural skills, harmony and theory, music history, and choral singing. 2. A specialized qualification in a particular area of music. During their final two years of study, our students must complete seven courses in one of the four following concentrations: a. Classical Performance: this consists of two more years of Advanced Primary Study, as well as courses in performance practice, analysis, and composition. b. At the NZSM you can major in a wide range of disciplines including: Classical Performance; Jazz (Performance, or Composition and Arranging); Composition (Instrumental and Vocal, or Sonic Arts); or the broadly based Bachelor of Music in Music Studies. That programme includes streams in Ethomusicology, Musicology and Jazz Studies.Students can also major in Music in a Bachelor of Arts degree.Students wanting to apply for Classical or Jazz Performance at NZSM will need to audition.

This degree option offers maximum flexibility and allows students to combine music with a greater number of non-music papers than is possible within the BMus alone. Students may take a diverse range of non-music papers in a BA, or may elect to do a double major with another subject area.
