The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics prepares students to become researchers in this area of biology. The Department houses state-of-the-art laboratories that allow the study of high-throughput genomics, bioinformatics, recombinant DNA, model organisms, and cell cultures for educational and research purposes. As the courses are entirely in English, the students’ language skills are expected to be at high level. The Degree Programme combines molecular and ecosystem studies and students will be involved in both fields.
Most of the teaching modules include practical work, field and laboratory courses or seminars in addition to the lectures so students will get a lot of hands on practical training.An understanding of ecosystem processes requires a detailed view of their molecular basis so students will gain diverse and advanced knowledge in natural sciences and related disciplines.Each of the modules leading to fulfill this aim is valued at six credits so the first three semesters will consist of five modules per semester with 4 hours per module per week amounting to a total of 30 credits and 20 teaching hours per semester.The fourth semester is an elective semester during which students can choose to do practical training abroad or to stay in Göttingen with a choice of modules read mainly by international visiting professors from abroad.Semester five is taken up by another five modules (of 6 credits and 4 hours per week each) including a module on Scientific Writing in order to help prepare students for their B.Sc.
