The Department of Metallurgical Technologies as a part of the Metallurgical Institute of LSTU was founded in 2015 by the merger of the departments of Metallurgy and Thermophysics. The united department was headed by a graduate of the department "Metallurgy", a candidate of technical sciences, associate professor of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation Rogotovsky Alexander Nikolaevich. The history of the department begins in 1964, when the department of metallurgy began its activity, which was headed by an outstanding metallurgist and teacher of higher education, Honored Worker of Science and Technology, Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences Sharov Sergey Ivanovich. At the same time, at the Department of Metallurgy, a section "Metallurgical furnaces" was organized to train engineers in the specialty "Heat engineering and automation of metallurgical furnaces". In 1973 this section was reorganized into the Department of Heat Engineering and Automation of Metallurgical Furnaces, which later became the Department of Thermophysics. The department trains highly qualified personnel in close connection with the largest employer in the region - PJSC "NLMK".
