Marine Biology

A bachelor's degree is awarded at the successful completion of an undergraduate academic program. It is often the first degree a student received in his or her academic career. It typically takes four years of full-time study to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Marine biology is the study of plant and animal life in water habitats and ecosystems. Students who study marine biology also learn about astronomy, biology, ecology, geology, oceanography and zoology in order to get a better understanding of ocean life and all that it contains.

From indigenous civilizations to modern day empires, North America has plenty of hands-on educational opportunities to offer scholars. Filled with a range of distinct cultures, students can educate themselves in well-rounded way.

The department provides an environment in which excellent teaching coupled with diverse research opportunities encourage our faculty to become leaders in their discipline. Our teaching emphasizes current theories of biological science, knowledge of basic investigative skills, and methods of critical inquiry. Our research programs, in both applied and basic aspects of discovery, value investigations of biological phenomena that impact the quality of life in our region and beyond. We lend our professional expertise to all endeavors that work for the improvement of the human condition and our environment. We believe the importance of modern biological principles must transcend the university classroom and enable our students to contribute as global citizens. Degrees Offered The Department of Biology and Marine Biology offers the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in biology, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in marine biology, both of which prepare students for advanced study, and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in biology, a more flexible program which can be designed to meet personal educational goals. Transfer Bachelor of Marine Biology

Southwestern Oregon Community College
Campus 2 years September 2017 USA Coos Bay

The Associate of Science (AS) Marine Biology Emphasis is designed for students who intend to transfer to the University of Oregon (UO) and complete their degree at Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB), majoring in marine biology. [+]

The Associate of Science (AS) Marine Biology Emphasis is designed for students who intend to transfer to the University of Oregon (UO) and complete their degree at Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB), majoring in marine biology. The background offered by this major, however, is entirely appropriate for preparation for upper division emphasis in other professional fields like medical, dental, or veterinary school. This AS degree, as presented, also satisfies the requirements for an AA/OT for ease of transfer to UO. By completing general education requirements for the AA/OT, as well as the recommended science courses, students will be able transfer to UO and complete a BS in Marine Biology or a BS in Biology with Marine Biology Emphasis. Career options for marine biology graduates include jobs in state and federal government, advanced training for research and teaching in the marine sciences, and most other careers available to broadly trained biologists. The following program outline is one of many possible course configurations that would satisfy the requirements for an AS Marine Biology Emphasis and AA/OT transfer degree and also fulfill basic requirements for graduation from UO. Each student should meet with an advisor to determine appropriate sequence of courses to be taken, depending on placement scores, transfer credits, and other factors. Upon completion of an AS Marine Biology Emphasis (and AA/OT) and transfer to UO, additional courses need to be taken at the Eugene campus. These courses include organic chemistry CH331 and CH335, BI214, and physics (unless it was taken... [-]

Unique in shape, including the importance given to laboratory and field trips, and its content, it can acquire a GED (general pathway) or a more specialized in one of five concentrations training - Biogeochemistry environmental - Ecology - Wildlife and habitat - environmental Physiology and biochemistry - marine Science Unique in shape, including the importance given to laboratories, and its content, it can acquire specialized training, with honors diploma in the a concentration or one of the following paths: wildlife and habitats; Wildlife as we know them today are the results of many environmental pressures, whether natural or anthropogenic. The BA in biology, wildlife habitats and concentration, to better understand the links between the various wildlife species and their habitats are learning how to shape and develop wildlife habitat to guide the demographic trajectory of a species. It is located at the interface of ecology and management of natural resources, docking in advanced analytical approaches and of landscape ecology concepts, population dynamics and conservation. Students learn to identify, analyze, monitor and model wildlife populations to ensure the sustainability and in some cases their exploitation. ecology; Ecology focuses on the interactions between living things and their environment by analyzing the components, operation and evolution of ecosystems. Bachelor in Marine Biology

Wisconsin Lutheran College
Campus 3 years September 2017 USA Milwaukee

The marine biology major offers students experiential learning opportunities in marine science and ecosystems, including diving and snorkeling in different marine contexts, hiking and study in shore environments, collection and identification of marine organisms, and lab work. [+]

The marine biology major offers students experiential learning opportunities in marine science and ecosystems, including diving and snorkeling in different marine contexts, hiking and study in shore environments, collection and identification of marine organisms, and lab work. Studies in marine biology will serve as a basis for work or further study in many areas of marine science. The marine biology major provides students with the biological and ecological tools to develop a basic understanding of marine ecosystems. Classroom, laboratory, and field experiences work together to allow students to apply learned techniques and concepts in real-world situations both locally and in marine environments. These studies are taught from a Christian and Lutheran perspective in order to understand that our Lord is responsible for initiating and sustaining these systems. As students study abroad and conduct research in various environments, they are encouraged to consider the social, cultural, and historical factors affecting – and being affected by – the area marine ecosystem. What Makes the Program Distinctive? Marine biology majors actively engage in biological research with professors, a practice not often found in undergraduate programs. Students are able to engage in experiential learning in Jamaica, Florida, Australia, and Grenada. Close proximity to the Medical College of Wisconsin, as well as the Milwaukee County Zoo and Discovery World, provide additional opportunities for research, education, and graduate employment. ACADEMICS AND RESEARCH Student Research and Experiential Learning The number of faculty-guided undergraduate research projects is always growing. Marine biology majors can participate in a number of... [-]
