As an English major, your study of language and literature will lead to a better understanding of our world. You'll explore the properties and power of language through courses in the three genres of poetry, drama and prose from the British, American and Canadian traditions. You may also develop your skills in creative writing, select from special topics such as tragedy, comedy and myth, or delve into the life and works of a major author.

English is not just about the rhetorical and creative aspects of literature. It’s about examining history, culture, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and the human condition to determine what a text means in the context of when and where it was written, and how it relates to us today. Language is the primary means by which we communicate our values, our ideals and our vision. The study of English asks fundamental questions about literature and how we, as humans, express ourselves and interact with others. It is the science of communication and critical inquiry.

The United States is a bilingual nation, having the second-largest Spanish-speaking population in the world. 600 million people (or 7.6% of the global population) speak Spanish, and the United States is the second largest Spanish-speaking country in the world (after Mexico) It is projected that 27.5% of the U.S. population will be of Hispanic heritage by 2060. As a result, communications in Spanish on the Internet and in business have increased by 1,511% over the past 20 years.

Words shape the narrative of humanity. They have the ability to reach across time and distance, build bridges or deepen divides, immortalize ideas and provide a wide-reaching record of the human experience. In Carroll University’s English and Writing program, you’ll discover their power and come away with a better understanding of the world and your place in it.

The Publishing Arts major provides students with hands-on opportunities in publication design (books and journals) as they work on the team that produces the Talking River Review (a student-run and nationally recognized literary journal). They develop skills in editing, project supervision, graphic design, utilizing up-to-date technology, business communication and organization, critical evaluation of written works, distribution, and sales. The Publishing Arts major also provides students with dynamic exposure to literature, creative production, and workplace decision-making.

A major in English is useful in jobs where critical thinking, clear communication, and effective writing skills are a priority. Additionally, it is a recognized gateway to graduate study in literature and writing, as well as advanced professional degrees in law and medical school. Students who enjoy literature and are interested in growing as writers will find a major in English an enjoyable and marketable degree. Culminating in a senior project developed in close consultation with one or more faculty members, the major is designed to ensure broad familiarity with major periods and genres of American, British, and international literature, and is a way to study history and human cultures as well. A sense of community is strong among LC State English majors who provide a number of services to the campus community, including staffing our campus Writing Center.

Trevecca’s Bachelor of Arts in English education is an interdisciplinary program that gives you a foundation for becoming an effective and engaging English teacher in grades 6-12, equipping you to teach important skills like reading, spelling, composition, and critical thinking.

Trevecca’s Bachelor of Arts in English prepares you to enter any of the numerous fields that prize creativity, critical thinking, writing acumen, and the ability to create and communicate convincing arguments and content. Beyond building a strong foundation in English, you’ll tailor your coursework to match your interests and goals by choosing from concentrations in literature or creative writing.

Trevecca’s Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary studies offers an endorsement in elementary education and an endorsement in English as a second language (ESL), preparing students to be competent and compassionate teachers in grades K-5 and/or to offer ESL instruction in grades K-12.

This Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary studies offers an endorsement in early childhood education (PreK-3) and a secondary endorsement in English as a second language (ESL). The degree prepares students to be competent and compassionate teachers of young students and those with language barriers, providing them with the strong foundation and early intervention they need to excel in learning.

A Spanish degree from Loras focuses on the development of linguistic and cultural competence through active and applied learning, inside and outside of the classroom. Students develop skill sets that prepare them for a globalized workplace through the combined exploration of language and culture. The flexibility of the Spanish major allows students to obtain an additional specialization in their area of interest, giving them an experience that’s in high demand in the international marketplace.

Students are introduced to the major in Literary Studies, sharpen their analytical skills in Literary Criticism, and complete a scholarly Senior Literature Capstone project mentored by two members of the English Literature faculty. They also choose courses from the whole history of English and American literature, in all genres, along with selected courses in Irish, Canadian, Russian, and World literature.

The Creative Writing major at Loras College offers extraordinary depth and range, together with the kind of close, sustained faculty mentoring which is only possible at a small college. Students choose from introductory and advanced courses in Fiction, Poetry, and Creative Nonfiction, along with specialized courses in Screenwriting; Nature Writing; Fantastic Fiction; Writing for New Media; Writing as Social Action; Rhetoric & Political Engagement, Grant & Proposal Writing; and Revision, Editing & Publishing.

The Latin program is designed to provide thorough and rigorous training in ancient Latin. Majors may leverage the training this major provides toward advancement in a variety of fields, including teaching. (Majors of ours have gained admission to Master of Arts in Teaching [MAT] programs in Latin.)

The Judaic studies program offers students an interdisciplinary perspective on three millennia of Jewish culture: Jewish social, religious, and political history; Jewish literature — biblical, modern, and postmodern; Jewish thought; and modern Israel.
