The Major The required courses are designed to help students acquire a sensitivity to linguistic nuance and power, and an ability to communicate persuasively. Requirements: Minimum of 11 courses There are four core courses required for the English major, two taken at the sophomore level, two at the senior: ENGL 201 Critical Reading ENGL 202 Texts and Contexts ENGL 402 Literary Criticism OR ENGL 403 Current Literary Theory ENGL 420 Senior Seminar in Literature In addition to these four courses, majors will choose (in consultation with their advisors) seven courses from department offerings that will broaden and deepen their literary studies. The Minor This minor is designed for the student who wishes to read, discuss, and enjoy novels, plays, stories, poetry, and literary theory as part of a broad liberal education. Music Oriented at Education The aim is to educate students in the area of music theory and praxis. The basis is put on disciplines necessary in musical education – music theory, harmony, counterpoint, history of music, musical forms. Practical part is based on instrument playing, voice training, vocal sight singing and conducting techniques. Graduates should be prepared for getting a job in educational institutions for musical activities of children, in cultural institutions, museums etc. They are not prepared for independent profession of music teacher. English Language Oriented at Education The entrance exam is conducted as a written test consisting of the following four parts: - Grammar test (multiple choice) – this section tests the applicants’ knowledge of grammatical structures in isolated sentences. - Grammar-lexical test (gap-filling, rephrasing sentences, etc.) – this section tests the applicants’ ability to reformulate the meaning of a sentence using different grammatical and lexical structures. - Lexical test (multiple choice) – this section tests the applicants’ knowledge of vocabulary by asking them to gap-fill appropriate words in a shorter newspaper article. - Reading and comprehension test (multiple choice) – this section test the applicants’ ability to understand the meaning of a longer newspaper article. In order to pass the test, the applicant should have substantial knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary, be well-versed in reading and comprehension, and have the ability to navigate an unabridged or slightly abridged English text.
