Bachelor in East Asian Studies Tel-Hai College is proud to be the first college in Israel to open a department devoted to East Asian Studies, launched in the fall of 2012. The nations of East Asia fulfill increasingly central economic and political roles in the world today, and Israel's ties with them are developing rapidly. Thus there is a growing demand for knowledgeable professionals qualified for East Asia related positions in government ministries, businesses, high-tech industry, tourism, as well as in the academia. Yet the appeal of this diverse and fascinating region to Israel and the West transcends these practical concerns, to include the cultural and philosophical spheres as well. The Academic Curriculum Offered as one part of a double major, courses in the Department of East Asian Studies focus on China, Japan, and Korea. First-year studies include introductory courses on the history of and culture of China and Japan. In addition, each student studies the Chinese or Japanese language for at least two years, with the option of continuing on for yet another year. Second-year courses include modern China, modern Japan and a choice between the following three options: past and present views of human nature in Chinese philosophy; and Korea and Japan: history, image, and the role of collective memory. Bachelor in Environmental Sciences Environmental sciences form a multidisciplinary academic field that integrates physical, biological, and social sciences into the study of the environment and the solution of environmental problems. With a clear understanding of the need to preserve natural resources while enabling sustainable development of the Galilee, Israel, and beyond, Tel-Hai College was the first institution in Israel to offer a comprehensive academic program focusing on environmental sciences, and continues to be the only Israeli college offering a B.Sc. degree in the field. New discipline of Ecology was initiated in 2013 dealing with environmental ecological aspects. The program provides students with the knowledge and tools to pursue careers in environmental-related occupations such as environmental researchers, public or private sector environmental process monitors, or to continue on to graduate studies in the field. In the course of their studies students receive certification for treatment and management of toxic materials from the Ministry for the Protection of the Environment. The Department also encourages students to be environmental activists in the community, and to become involved in regional environmental organizations. Scientists are responsible for the planning and production of foods from raw materials to the finished product, including quality control of agricultural supplies and raw materials, hygiene, sanitization, packing processes and additional critical components. Food safety (both in terms of microbes and toxicity) is of the highest concern to manufacturers, and thus there is a high demand for professionals on all levels. The Department of Food Sciences trains professionals to perform a variety of tasks in all branches of the food industry, as well as related industries, based on biological and biochemical processes of foods, food additives and raw materials.
