The Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in visual arts is a professional degree that equips students with expertise in their area of focus that will better prepare them for graduate school and employment opportunities as an artist within creative industries. The areas of focus in the B.F.A. in Visual Arts are: Ceramics & Sculpture; Digital Arts; Drawing & Painting; Graphic Design; Photography; and Printmaking and Paper Arts. (Please note: the area of focus does not appear in the degree title, and all graduates of the program receive a B.F.A. in Visual Arts.)

The School of Visual Development's BFA program provides a dynamic education in the art of scene-setting. The core curriculum emphasizes photography, figure modeling, form analysis, figure drawing, narrative principles, visual development for animation, character design, concept paintings, advanced exploration of perspective for video game design, and various other critical design disciplines.

The Painting and Drawing major is an interdisciplinary track that provides students with the resources to explore a dynamic, individualized studio practice. Students begin by learning fundamental skills based upon representation, then expand their work by exploring a variety of materials and self-directed concepts.

Students may major in Art and receive a Bachelor of Arts in Art. You may also major in any other discipline at the University and minor in Art. You have the option of selecting one or more concentrations during your course of study, including Fine Art, Graphic Design, Painting and Drawing, Photography and New Media

The iArts (Integrated Arts) BFA is a Level I, direct entry program that emphasizes interdisciplinary creative practice as a collective mode of learning, preparing students for professional careers in the arts. You will have the opportunity to engage with a range of hands-on media and techniques in art and performance, while also learning about the histories and critical contexts of art and performance locally, nationally and internationally. With a focus on student-directed learning, the BFA allows you to pursue your own interests and develop skill sets to support your personal, artistic expression. You will also have many opportunities to work collaboratively and expand beyond traditional arts practice to engage with one another and with the University and community at large.

This innovative program highlights the connections between performance, directing, and devised theatre, ensuring appreciation for historic traditions and anticipating future trends. Explore courses in acting, voice, and movement, and discover a range of performance techniques, including theatre for young audiences, improvisation, and physical theatre. Enrich your classroom experiences by performing in a season of exhilarating theatre productions that range in style and scale.

The Art degrees offered by the School of Art, Design, and Art History prepare students to pursue the professional production and exhibition of their own art or more in-depth study at the graduate school level. The art major allows students to develop a visual vocabulary, foster a deeper understanding of the formal visual relationships present in the art and design process, enhance their aesthetic awareness of art forms, and to promote the competency to independently seek further professional growth. The Art major requires 120 credit hours of undergraduate course work, including 78 credit hours in art, art history, and art-related courses. The art faculty is made up of practicing artists who work closely with the students, and students also work closely with each other as they develop their studio practice. Visiting artists and scholars, workshops, field trips and frequent on-campus exhibitions of professional artwork enhance student engagement with contemporary art. Additionally, students have opportunities to exhibit and present their artwork, assist in running on-campus galleries and studio art labs, and to partake in other hands-on art experiences.

It's the perfect gateway to attending graduate school for a master of fine arts degree (MFA) or doctorate in art education degree. With this professional degree, you can investigate visual and aesthetic discourse within your own artistic practice and in the context of history and contemporary culture. Because a BFA requires more art studio and art history courses, you'll engage with your discipline on a professional level, preparing you for careers in art fields or for graduate studies. The studio art track is designed to prepare students for careers in the fine arts in areas such as drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, or printmaking. It may also serve as a foundation for graduate study in fine arts.
