Latvia has both fee-paying and state-financed higher education. The country has two kinds of higher education courses. These include the academic and professional programs. Assessment Assessment of students’ knowledge is a continuous process, which lasts during the whole semester and it is done on the basis of independent assignments and tests, as well as passing credit tests and examinations twice a year. During the semester each course envisages several independent assignments – practical and laboratory works, tests and reports. At the end of each course students pass a written or oral examination or a credit test. In some courses, during which both lectures and laboratory works are planned, students take both a credit test and an examination. Assessment is made by a ten-point scale or with the help of a credit test. Programme structure The size of the Professional Bachelor study programme is 252 ECTS (168 CP), and the duration of the programme is 4 years. The programme consists of three parts: Part A (97,5 ECTS / 65 CP) – compulsory courses of Information Technology, Mathematics, Economics, Law, and Management; Part B (145,5 ECTS / 97 CP) – compulsory courses providing advanced competencies in Information Technology and Software Engineering, practice in industry, and development of Bachelor thesis Part C (9 ECTS / 6 CP) – free optional courses chosen according to students’ interests.
