Students may petition for adjustments in the Southwestern AS degree if course requirements are met for the first two years of any regionally accredited four-year institution offering a degree in education, early childhood education, family studies, human or child development. Eastern Oregon University distance education degree of liberal studies with an early childhood education emphasis articulates with SWOCC's AS degree. The AS degree is also articulated with Portland State University through their external degree program. All coursework specific to childhood education and family studies degrees and certificates is offered online through Southwestern’s online platform. Both the AS with an emphasis in childhood education and family studies and our AAS in Childhood Education and Family Studies are now accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation program. While at ONU, he helped to plan the STEM Academy, traveled to the Dominican Republic to show local teachers how to integrate engineering into their lessons, and spent a summer at Olin College in Massachusetts working on a research project with engineering students from across the country. He also student-taught at Allen East High School in Lima, Ohio, and interned in web applications development at Plumbline Solutions in Findlay, Ohio. OUTCOMES AND COURSES SOLID OUTCOMES The math education component of our engineering education program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). ONU education students have achieved a 100 percent passage rate for the past five years on the teacher licensure exam. 100 percent of our engineering education majors have found full-time jobs or enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation. Our students get a mix of theory and practical experience in classrooms around Birmingham and across the globe, and they’re taught and mentored by talented faculty who have first-hand experience about what works. We teach the way you’ll teach in your own classroom. Engage in a range of educational activities, then learn why they work and how to apply them yourself. You’ll be challenged and inspired at the same time. You’ll get lots of hands-on experience. First-year majors spend their January term working in local classrooms, then analyze their experience during spring semester. Students later work with youngsters in a specific area, such as reading, math, or social studies. And all of our students do at least a full semester of student teaching. We offer small, intimate classes that characterize the Birmingham-Southern experience. This major offers certification in both elementary education and collaborative teacher K-6 (special education).
