Bachelors in Economics and Administration in Massachusetts in USA. Economics - Primary Track Why are prices going up? Why are some products harder to get? These everyday questions, and others like them, are what economists try to answer. Economics is the study of how individuals, businesses, governments, and societies make decisions concerning the use and distribution of resources, such as time, money, and skills. It is the central science underlying business and public policies. A B.S. in Economics emphasizes a broad understanding of how consumers' and producers' behavior is influenced by certain events—such as changes in interest rates, changes in prices, and new government regulations. The Department of Economics offers two program tracks. The primary track allows students to choose their own outside minor to complement their study of economics and advance their career goals. Political science, finance, business administration, and foreign languages are some of the common choices for an outside minor. The quantitative track is a specialized program designed to prepare students for graduate education in economics. An education in economics prepares students for employment in a wide variety of jobs—including banking, real estate, insurance, financial management, sales, and public administration—and serves as an excellent foundation from which to pursue law school or other advanced degree work. Known for their comprehensive approach, actuaries enable smart, more confident decisions. Where do actuaries manage risk? At this time, the majority of actuaries work in careers that are associated with the insurance industry, though growing numbers work in other fields. They are heavily involved in insurance because that is society's most powerful answer for managing risk. Actuaries play a key role in designing insurance plans, determining the premium, monitoring the profitability of insurance companies, and recommending corrective action when appropriate. Actuaries working in insurance companies also ensure that insurance companies have set aside enough funds to pay claims and provide advice on how to invest the insurance companies' assets.
