Bachelor in Lifestyle

Willem de Kooning Academy
Campus Full time September 2017 Netherlands Rotterdam

Lifestyle takes an important place in the commercial market of fashion and interior, but the market is far more diverse. Art and culture, nutrition and health, media and politics are part of it. [+]

Lifestyle is everything. It is a term of which the expression is not limited to specific products, but in which the context is key. Its expression is used to map individuals, a culture or a sub-culture in terms of style. Identity is therefore a key concept in the lifestyle major while the term ‘daily life’ is at its heart. What do you eat? What do you wear? How do you transport yourself? Defining ‘daily life’ is a methodology to develop ideas to expand your focus from your own ‘domestic domain’ to ‘worldwide communities’ and to analyse their characteristic codes. Lifestyle takes an important place in the commercial market of fashion and interior, but the market is far more diverse. Art and culture, nutrition and health, media and politics are part of it. The market is a meeting place for opportunities. This is the place where the lifestyler sets change in motion at both micro and macro levels, locally and globally. Important traits in this subject are curiosity, affinity with style, interest in recent history and antennas for Zeitgeist. You also need to be able to read and write and be willing to bury yourself into a subject in order to develop intuition. Only then will you hopefully attain the courage to position yourself as an expert and to advise to and about a market that has not yet reached the masses. The term ‘lifestyle’ has developed from a fashion related term into an active anthropological term, a medium which helps us define, create, communicate, influence and safeguard identity. The lifestyler’s profession is evolving and the lifestyler is expected to be adventurous, almost an activist, in a changing world full of challenges; a world in which the contemporary multi-disciplinary professional practice is not easy to define. Should the Erasmus Medical Centre develop a new diet in the future, the development team should include a lifestyler on top of a doctor, a nutritionist and a facility manager! Creating Pioneers Our successful Lifestyle alumni include: Dorian Jurne Blanke & Rose Schildwacht (Rossi & Blake); Bibi Middelburg (honourable mention TWOTY Upcoming Talent); and Paulien Routs (winner TWOTY Upcoming Talent and listed in the HOT100). PORTFOLIO CHECKLIST Are you … talented in visual arts? independent and responsible? dedicated and motivated? entrepreneurial? Then visit one of our Open Days or Open Evenings – and bring your portfolio! – and apply for admission. WHAT A selection of 10-15 works which were preceded by a creative process For example: designs, objects, photos, films, games, animations, fashion (accessories), furniture, models, drawings, posters, campaigns, paintings, usable artifacts and sculptures. You can publish and present all of this in a neat traditional portfolio folder, but you can also use different methods: 3D work can be brought in a (cardboard) box, digital work can be presented on a laptop or tablet. Please note: apart from these works, please show us some other things you created. Make a careful selection between the two. That way, we can assess to what extent you have an insight in your own qualities and your own work. [-]

BA in Interior Design

IED – Istituto Europeo di Design Venice
Campus Full time 3 years October 2017 Italy Venice

The Interior Designer works on design projects in different environments: first and foremost is the domestic household area, private and collective living spaces, public spaces (airports, ports, stations), public service areas (banks, post offices, hospitals, schools, museums and exhibition spaces); places for consumers (shops, bars, hotels) and lastly open spaces (squares, courtyards, and playgrounds). [+]

THIS PROGRAM IS TAUGHT IN ITALIAN The three-year course in Interior Design is carried out as a “network” program: the first year takes place in our location in Venice, while the following years are taught in other locations belonging to IED group. The ”network” program offers the opportunity to enrich the student’s learning experience according to the individual characteristics of each location where the learning process takes place. Having completed the first year, the student can apply to the Academic committee to be admitted to the second year in another IED location. Interior design is a complex system where the design of spaces, lights, materials, color and furnishings all interact. The interior designer must tackle the aspects of the design of hospitality, wellness, and retail places as well as the design of furniture and lighting. Such market segments are receiving more attention because of behavioral changes and environmental issues. During the first year, the student acquires the necessary tools to perceive the shape of the objects, and to create a project: from blueprints, to testing through pc, to the 3-D check through the prototype. In addition, the student acquires the historical knowledge about design, tackling the various fields of art, fashion, communication, product design, and architecture. He’s exposed to different materials, both natural and artificial, and familiarizes with their properties and various work processes. The second year is aimed at deepening the instrumental, cultural, and technical topics acquired during the first year. Additional fields of investigation and of knowledge are introduced to complete the individual education. The student applies the methodology gained through the design of projects on topics related to industrial production, to space and service systems for houses and offices, while experimenting in all project areas relevant to a designer. In the third year the student deals with topics unfolding new cultural complexity, and acquires the final tools for processing and communicating a project. Designing itself plays a paramount role. The student is encouraged to become independent, developing skills to make coherent and sound choices, and to establish relationships with potential clients. [-]

BA in Interior Design

IED – Istituto Europeo di Design Florence
Campus Full time 3 years October 2017 Italy Florence

The Interior Designer applies design skills to a variety of fields: staring from the domestic setting, these ultimately take in private and community residential spaces, public spaces (airports, ports and stations), public service venues (banks, post offices, hospitals, schools, museum interiors and installations), commercial and hospitality venues (shops, bars and hotels) and lastly open spaces (squares, courtyards and playgrounds). Bachelors in Interior Design in Europe 2017. THIS PROGRAM IS TAUGHT IN ITALIAN Interior design is an articulated system in which the process of designing spaces interacts with those of designing lighting, materials, colours and furnishings. Every interior designer has to come to terms with the topics of designing hospitality, wellness and commercial interiors, of designing lighting and of designing furnishings, all sectors that derive major impulses from changing human behavioural patterns and environmental issues. During the first year, students acquire familiarity with the tools they need to perceive object’s morphology and generate a design: the preliminary phase on paper, a check by computer and then the 3D check, using a mock-up. This is also when they learn about the historical context behind design work, how to take a cross-disciplinary approach to the fields of art, fashion, communication, design and architecture. In the area of technology, they come into contact with both natural and artificial materials, with development processes and with the perception of materials’ surfaces. The second year is devoted to developing on the instrumental, cultural and technical themes first studied in the first year. At this stage, students are also introduced to further fields of investigation and knowledge, so as to extend and complete their individual skills. They now apply the methods they have learned to creating design projects for areas related to industrial products and to systems of spaces and services, in both private and social contexts, conducting creative experiments in all the fields where designers work. In the third year, students tackle increasingly complex cultural topics and learn how to use the latest tools for elaborating and communicating their projects. The actual design work now occupies the lion’s share of their studies, as they learn to manage the development of a project completely independently. Students are now stimulated to learn how to work independently, make coherent, well-reasoned decisions, relate to their clients and bear the weight of clear responsibilities. This course is organised in partnership with Giulio Tanini (www.tanini.it) and ex.t (www.ex-t.it). [-]

Habitat Design The three-year post-diploma course in Habitat Design form designers in the following areas: interior architecture product design, green architecture and open spaces, exhibition stands and exhibitions. The course is active since 1987 and updated with each new edition. The course is recognized by MIUR as an Academic Diploma Level I. Who it is aimed at This university-level course is aimed at school leavers, from all types of secondary schools, who intend to dedicate themselves – to paraphrase Munari – to Art as a trade, in other words to a distinctly expressive-artistic technical activity, suitable for aesthetically and functionally improving the complex of elements that characterise the living environment, but without any town-planning implications and less involvement in bureaucratic-administrative procedures. It is an educational course that aims to emphasise the unitary character of the human environment and therefore of the instruments and skills required to ensure its care and increase its quality. Educational Objectives The objectives pursued in the Habitat Design course are: to guarantee to students the attainment of critical maturity, an understanding of the problems connected to transformational intervention on the living environment and methods for their most suitable solution; to provide students with technical knowledge and educational experiences in the fields of construction and production – artisan and industrial – for a speedy and satisfying start to their professional activities; to ensure graduates possess a secure planning method that encompasses creativity and rigour, both supported by an adequate grasp of the techniques of representation, both manual and computer-assisted, through the most advanced software available in 2 and 3D design and virtual modelling; to form characters who are expert in multiple and complementary techniques, all unified by method, guaranteeing, at the same time, a flexible planning attitude that allows the young professional to deal with the challenges arising from rapid social mutations and not just existing ones. Awarded qualification Academic Diploma Level I recognized by MIUR. Creative jobs The graduates in Habitat Design can operate in many fields: all those situations when the intervention is required of a specialist capable of guaranteeing aesthetic quality united with technical and functional performance, respecting the available budget and with a particular attention to detail. More precisely: fitting out public or private spaces, whether residential or for work; commercial locations and places that are open to the public; renovation, reconversion and rehabilitation of spaces, including for changes of use. The graduate in Habitat Design can draft plans and manage works for projects that do not require authorisation, that is, other than the abovementioned fittings of very sort: sets, exhibitions, temporary structures, gardens and open spaces, as well as designing objects of all kinds, including those that will be mass produced, by artisan or industrial structures. This is an extremely vast and varied operative field, that can allow unsuspected talents to emerge and also create professional opportunities in promising but largely unexplored sectors. As a professional, graduates can join one of the professional associations in Italy or abroad. With this aim, the course teaches, other than the disciplines inherent in design, all those relative to construction materials and working techniques; the history and criticism of architecture, design and the figurative arts; the principles at the base of the visual languages as instruments and codes of invention; modelling applied to design. With these pragmatic objectives that aim at the acquisition, in a set time, of a solid professionalism, this course takes the form of a valid alternative to more theoretical studies. After a first year aimed at establishing and consolidating the operative method and culture of creative design, over the next two years students increasingly deal with all the technical aspects and experiences that will be useful in their profession. The three-year Habitat Design course aims directly at the result: the possession, on the part of the graduate, of professional skills and capabilities.
