The degree is designed to produce graduates for the simulation, virtual worlds and games industries and provide professional game programmers with the skills and knowledge of a computer science degree contextualised by gaming applications, plus core skills in programming and design. This degree will provide you with specialist skills in digital game/simulation design and programming. You will create 2D and 3D interactive applications for entertainment and serious, real life scenario visualisation (virtual worlds). You will also learn how to research the market, develop business concepts and manage digital game/ simulation development projects. You could end up working as a 3D Games Programmer or Simulation Software Engineer — building interactive virtual worlds for real-world training and research! The degree is jointly delivered online by CIT and face-to-face in AIE Campuses. Prerequisites You must: have basic computing skills including being able to operate a personal computer, other hardware (for example printers, games consoles, PDAs etc), create and manage basic files, perform simple operating system tasks and work with more than one standard software package such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases or web browser. In the final trimesters of study, students learn a number of sophisticated skills including character rigging, intricate application scripting for games engines and motion capture for real-time games animation and cinematics. These skills are geared towards the final project which begins with the formation of teams, the generation of ideas and a thorough work-up of the games design process. In the final trimester of studio development, teams spend time producing their game concept in a process designed to emulate a real-world game production. With lecturers acting as Executive Producers, students incorporate knowledge developed thus far to produce a fully-interactive game world. These worlds may be suited for use as either a prototype of a possible larger production, or a complete smaller-scale independent games project. Students quickly begin to develop a deeper level of understanding of the processes, design and performance qualities of great animation. Concepts in acting, gesture, 2D and 3D form are also explored from the traditional to the digital, and from the roughly conceptual to the polished and professional. Students are also introduced to the visual language of filmmaking and explore the magic of effects and systems such as motion capture, one of the techniques used in some of the most recent blockbuster films. The 3D Animation unit delves deeper into the acting and storytelling aspects of the art. Students are required to develop their own interpretation on assigned themes, bringing their characters to life with emotion and personality. Material developed in class is included in the students’ professional show reel. In the final stage of study, further sophisticated skill areas are explored, including character rigging and motion (or performance) capture. This leads into a final project, which begins with an intensive pre-production subject where students form teams to generate ideas and workshop the design process together. Under the supervision of their lecturers, students go into full studio production mode. They are required to complete and ‘executive produce’ their final team project through the execution of a high quality 3D animated film that may also involve co-operation and collaboration with students from other courses.
