Civil engineering graduates pursue careers that engage them in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of bridges, buildings, foundations, dams, sanitary and solid waste disposal systems, highways, airport facilities, transportation systems, waterways, hydroelectric installations, pipelines, coal preparation and loading facilities, among others. Many of our graduates also go on to pursue graduate degrees. What do students say they enjoy most about the program? Many of our students participate in the WVU Tech Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) which allows students to develop personal relationships with students and professionals that last beyond graduation. During the annual spring Virginias’ Conference, the ASCE Student Chapter competes with students from other engineering schools in several activities that include a concrete canoe race, steel bridge building contest, surveying competition, problem-solving contest, environmental design contest and the Hardy Cross presentation Design is incorporated across the WVU Tech civil engineering curriculum, and the design experience begins early with some exposure in surveying and mechanics of materials courses.
