Students are required to complete courses in accounting, computer information systems, management, and marketing. This extensive training makes it possible for our graduates to target a wide variety of employment opportunities or continue their education in graduate school. About the Faculty Economics classes at UCM are taught by dynamic, experienced, and nationally recognized faculty members who provide personalized attention for each student. These faculty members bring diverse training and work experiences to the classroom and are actively engaged in economic research. This research, which includes environmental aid, labor market analysis, valuation of sports teams and investigations of statistical methodologies, along with involvement in professional organizations, places the faculty at the forefront of their respective fields. Student Involvement Students pursuing an economics degree have access to a variety of campus organizations and events. The Department of Economics, Finance, and Marketing sponsors the Economics Club which promotes social interaction between students and faculty. In addition to on-campus activities, students are encouraged to complete an internship in economics in order to gain greater practical skills and insight during the completion of the undergraduate degree. Special Facilities The department's offices are housed in the Dockery Building. Classrooms, however, are located in the state-of-the-art Ward Edwards Building, which includes a large computer lab, group computer rooms, group and individual study rooms, student organization offices, and common areas for students. Classrooms are equipped with up-to-date computer hardware and software. Placement Training in economics will give you practical skills and many career choices. An economics degree or background is ideal for students planning for careers in the following areas: research analysts for private corporations such as banks, financial service institutions, and insurance companies; consultants for management, data processing, and health care firms; and analysts for government agencies at the federal, state, and local levels. Studies show that the average compensation for graduates holding an economics degree is higher than all other undergraduate fields except engineering. UCM's Office of Career Services assists students in finding employment throughout the academic year. The Associate of Science/Oregon Transfer Business (ASOT-BUS) is a degree that is intended to prepare students for transfer into a baccalaureate business program at an Oregon University System (OUS) institution. Students who receive this degree will have met all lower division general education requirements of that institution's baccalaureate degree programs. Students transferring with this degree will have junior standing for registration purposes. Admission to the business school/program of any OUS institution is not guaranteed upon completion of the ASOT-BUS degree. It is strongly recommended that students review the list of university-specific prerequisites and recommendations and contact the specific OUS institution business school/program early in the first year of their ASOTBUS program at Southwestern to be advised about additional requirements and procedures for admission consideration to the OUS institution and the business school/program. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Complete a minimum of 90 credit hours and all courses must be passed with a grade of 'C' or better. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better. The department is open to international courses from other disciplines, subject to relevance. Minimum of one semester abroad, with additional study abroad recommended and supported by the department. Language proficiency: Testing placement at the entry point to the 400-level of a foreign language by graduation. All students must take at least 8 credits of a foreign language. Students who are already proficient may take the required 8 credits either in the language in which they are proficient or in another language. The expectation of the major is that students will take at least 8 credits of language relevant to their area of concentration. Identify and understand the challenges and opportunities of operating a business or non-governmental organization in international settings. Utilize critical thinking to produce sound strategic decisions by identifying, comparing, and contrasting how foreign and domestic businesses formulate strategies and operate globally. Develop a capacity to meaningfully evaluate a company (or non-profit) performance with the application of appropriate financial and statistical techniques as well as accounting methods. Demonstrate an interdisciplinary knowledge of at least one other area of the world outside of the United States. Develop a critical understanding of the foundations and varieties of capitalism around the world and understand their impact on current business practices. Utilize verbal communication skills to engage an audience with a coherent, persuasive research presentation. Accurately apply written communication skills to produce in-depth written analyses of course readings and/or cases. This is an important part of any student's education; it provides them a wealth of information that will enable them to perform deftly when they begin their post-graduation career. There, of course, is the rub - which is the task of parlaying their classroom experience into their first job. The Hardin-Simmons University Kelley College of Business Internship Program permits students to begin working in a business setting while still enrolled in the university. The benefit of such an experience is that students can begin to apply the knowledge they learn in the classroom before graduation. Not only does this experience allow students to gain upper division elective hours, but it also gives them an opportunity to determine what route they plan to follow in business upon graduation. Eligibility for the internship program: students must be enrolled in the Kelley College of Business students must have completed four semesters or at least 60 semester hours of credit toward a business degree students must carry a minimum 2.5 grade point average and meet any other requirements set by individual employers students must be recommended by their advisors for internship credit. Course credit: Students may petition the Kelley College of Business to earn three semester hours of college credit by meeting the following criteria: 1. maintain a journal relative to the job The journal that you keep while taking part in your internship should contain documentation of all tasks performed during the internship, specific experiences pertaining to your major and career field, and observations regarding information and practices that relate to what you have learned in the classroom. This journal will be included with your report as an appendix. 2. submit a typed report summarizing the internship The report is that heart of the internship. An internship bridges the worldplace with the classroom. The report is where you will demonstrate that you are able to link the job and classroom together. In the report, you are to identify how the internship experience relates to what he/she has learned in the classroom. It is important that the student talk about specific information learned in courses that was useful or used during the internship. The report should also include current events in the student's field that they came across and also skills attained on the job. This report should also describe the courses at HSU that were most helpful to you in your internship. 3. prepare and give an oral presentation to the Kelley College of Business faculty The presentation is esentially a summarized, oral form of your report and journal. The student may use visuals such as powerpoint, white board, or an overhead projector in order to facilitate his/her presentation to the faculty. Presentations are typically 20 minutes long (which should include about 5 minutes for questions). 4. receive a satisfactory job evaluation from the employer. This can take the form of a recommendation letter or the completion of a written evaluation of your work by the employer upon request of the student. Course credit counts as an advanced business elective. Pass/fail grades are given for internship credit. The student's faculty advisor must approve the internship. The internship experience requires at least 100 hours of work related to the student's academic field. Student Organizations The Kelley College of Business at Hardin-Simmons University is home to several student organizations. All are vibrant, dynamic organizations existing to develop leadership and business skills and life-long friendships among members. Delta Mu Delta is an International Honor Society in Business.
