Criticism and Curatorial Practice at OCAD U is the first undergrad program in Canada to prepare artists to be critics and curators. Students in our program also get experience in the studio making art themselves. We believe that people who work in all areas of the art and culture world benefit from this hands-on experience. In this program, you’ll learn about professional practices in museums, galleries, and many other creative institutions. You’ll benefit from studying with artists, curators, writers, and designers. You’ll also learn how contemporary art and design productions and exhibitions reach the public. This exciting four-year program will earn you a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Study art history in the place art and design is made at Canada’s biggest art and design university. Our program is unique, in that you also get to take studio courses and make art and design yourself. The program emphasizes the expanded field of modern and contemporary art history, which includes design, photography, architecture, performance and new media, as well as painting and sculpture.

As a Hanover art major, you'll travel to cities near and far to study historical masterpieces. But your experience will be decidedly 21st century. By exploring the breadth of media at your fingertips in the modern world – from drawing to painting to sculpture to photography – you'll discover for yourself which medium best expresses your vision in a particular work of art.

The Medieval-Renaissance Studies major is an interdepartmental major that will focus your attention on the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and their classical antecedents. This major will give you the structure of discipline-specific courses (including history, literature and art history) and the flexibility of working across scholarly disciplines.

This intensive 120-credit studio production program emphasizes analytical, creative, and experiential aspects of design, studio, and new media art. The BFA AVT is designed to prepare students professionally as visual artists or for graduate study in the arts. Students devote a significant portion of their college careers to an in-depth study in their concentration. In addition to completing the university-wide general education requirements and electives, BFA AVT majors must complete Studio Foundations Experience, studio core and research practicum courses, art history, and critical theory requirements, interdisciplinary studio course electives, Professional Practice, and a capstone. Students choose a concentration in either Graphic Design or Studio Art.

The Design Option offers students the study of graphic design, web design and motion graphics, plus development of fundamental design knowledge, skills, and creativity. All design courses are offered as hybrid courses, meeting once a week face-to face classroom, and with an online component, preparing students with fundamental understanding of the design processes in print media, web design and motion graphics. In addition, they are introduced to professional practices in graphic design.

The Art History Option offers students a diversity of exposure to the styles and subjects of cultures and nations of the Western and non-Western world, from prehistoric times to the contemporary era. Particular emphasis is placed on developing the student's ability to critically understand the ideas and imagery found within the art works of various cultures and individual artists and architects. The School of Art History's BFA program blends academic inquiry and practice with one of the most extensive studios art and design programs in the world. Merging the classical tradition of studying western art with the skills and practice of fine art education, our students gain the unique perspective and ability to discuss broad themes around history's most enduring and inspiring works of art.

The Academy of Art University’s School of Art History BA program is a unique major that addresses the traditional art historical study through the analysis of visual culture from antiquity to the present. Complemented with fine art studio coursework (12 units), the BA allows for students to engage in critical and research-based analysis of art and architecture, learning to study the visual culture through its role and influence on different cultures and periods. With internationally recognized faculty and access to a rich offering of coursework, the AAU’s Art History BA prepares students for a career in art-related fields: e.g. in art galleries, museums, foundations, archiving, publishing, and public arts administration.

Students of the BA in Cinematic Arts have access to a production facility, editing suite, 4k cameras, and the latest in accessories, and a sound stage to top it off.
