The graphic design program takes a traditional Bauhaus approach to subject matter. Students begin with basic principles and historical overviews of visual art and design. As students progress, further specialization in design topics occupy upper division courses. Course subject matter includes typography, print publications, branding, logo design, digital photography, web design, motion design, animation and interactive/mobile applications. Students complete their education with client-based projects preparing them for future employment and simulating a contemporary studio environment. An internship requirement exposes students to the professional workplace. The philosophy of the design program is to create leaders in the design community who can originate, develop and produce a wide range of messages in any media. The program strives to create functional, usable and aesthetically appropriate solutions to the increasingly complex design problems encountered in society. While production skills are essential, especially for entry-level designers, the ability to manage and continually improve skill sets, regardless of the technological future, will allow individuals the best opportunity for advancement in the profession. Graphic Design students learn techniques and processes to build their portfolios with works prepared for both traditional print and new media including typography, branding and identity, promotional campaigns, publications, motion, and interactive. Typefaces, logos, and websites, drawing, painting, and video: all part of the SASD Graphic Design Program. The program emphasizes process, real-world community projects, and skill-building toward a final self-directed project in the senior year. The program follows current trends in engineering education and focuses on student outcomes. Students are exposed to a broad base of knowledge and skills in engineering science, natural science, mathematics, and complementary studies in concert with an applied project-based design stream simulating the engineering profession. Students entering the degree program will be actively engaged in the profession of engineering from day one, providing creative and sustainable solutions to society’s problems. The degree program is designed to provide a highly flexible learning environment that is responsive to the dynamic needs of students and the industries that employ them. In addition to fundamental science, engineering science and mathematics courses, students are required to develop skills in engineering design, communication, analysis, project management, professional ethics and more. With a solid grounding in these fundamentals, students in Program Years 3 and 4 can enhance their technical knowledge by choosing one of three engineering focus areas: Mechatronics (MT), Sustainable Energy (SE), or Bioresources (BR). Engineering students in this program must make responsible decisions based on good judgment and an ability to justify decisions within a structured analytical framework. Based on this generalist philosophy, this program is designed to develop a student’s ability to think. This fundamental requirement of engineers to think critically in response to ever-changing and complex situations is accomplished through a design stream core which relies heavily on inquiry-based learning supported by traditional lecture-based knowledge.
