This degree will equip you with the knowledge and critical skills to understand the histories and theories of visual, material and spatial cultures. This will be a rich and rounded experience as you go beyond the contextual study of art, architecture and design. You'll explore the power of images to influence debates, both historically and in the present day, and develop transferable skills in visual literacy. As you progress you'll acquire critical skills that address the subject area’s place in the wider humanities and as a component of study in the creative and cultural industries.

The degree starts by developing your understanding of the world we live in through a variety of perspectives, periods and subjects – including art history. You’ll then take two specialist art history modules, discovering more about art and visual culture across many periods and places. Through exploring the lavishly illustrated module books, and extensive audio, video and interactive material, you will gain a good understanding of the art-historical debates that shape this exciting subject and develop a range of skills in visual analysis.

From poetry to string quartets, and from sculpture to short stories, the extraordinary range of human culture offers rich possibilities for study. This broad and absorbing course develops a deep understanding of the world we live in and how we got here, covering a fascinating variety of perspectives, periods and subjects – including art history, classical studies, creative writing, English language, English literature, history, modern languages, music, philosophy, and religious studies.

Art Philosophy brings together Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art Design and Philosophy at the School of Humanities. You will be taught by artists of international standing and by respected practicing philosophers. The Philosophy section of the course will introduce you to advanced philosophical approaches toward contemporary issues in politics, ethics, art, film, literature, and the sciences.

Conservators play a key role in the protection and care of cultural heritage, preserving artworks, architecture, archaeology, and museum collections for future generations to enjoy. The BA (Hons) Conservation of Cultural Heritage degree offers the chance to gain extensive, hands-on experience working on a range of historic materials provided by museums, historic houses, and private collections.

This is the only degree in the UK to combine the specialist study of Asian, African and European art history. It is taught jointly by the Department of the History of Art and Archaeology at SOAS and the History of Art department at UCL. Students select courses from each institution. They receive theoretical and methodological training, which is combined with the study of particular regions, themes and critical issues.
