Bachelors in Arts in Europe 2017. The world is increasingly changing. Facing the prospect of a second collapse of the global economy, humanity is searching for a substainable economic, social and cultural plan to take us into the future. Classical boundaries between disciplines are no longer of any significance. Innovation is taken place in between borders of science, economics and arts. Do you want to be part of this future and be a ‘critical engaged artist’ of innovative and artistic concepts which combine entrepreneurial and social issues? Does your imagination go beyond the limits of science and arts? Do you think in terms of projects rather than classes? If so, iArts is the answer. iArts stands for interdisciplinary Arts, an intensive international three-year Bachelor’s programme for the creative and intelligent multitalented. It builds bridges between the arts, sciences, society and entrepreneurship. This hybrid is a joint initiative of the Maastricht Academy of Performing Arts, the Maastricht Academy of Music, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University and Van Eyck. The programme is an exciting cross-over of artistic skills, academic reflection, research and entrepreneurship. They are connected in projects and seminars with a strong focus on today’s societal issues. This makes iArts the first bachelor’s programme in the Netherlands to link interdisciplinarity in the arts to academic scholarship and partners outside of the academy. Projects The iArts programme is a 4 year bachelor’s programme within 3 years. This means it is a very intense, high-density programme. In the course of the programme you’ll work on a series of projects. You’ll invent creative and original solutions for current social and cultural issues, in the form of artistic products or artful interventions. Think installations, films, performances, and games. Think meetings, publications, plans, and enterprises. Each and every intervention will be the result of interdisciplinary teamwork. Your teachers are experts in their fields and have experience with interdisciplinary encounters. The study programme is built up around four domains; Arts & Society, Arts & Science, Arts & Entrepreneurship and Arts & Culture. The blocks are projects connected to domains, which are organized together with different partners in the world from the Arts, Sciences and Society. Next to fulfill these projects there will be courses with theory and the methods and techniques to become a ‘critical engaged artist’. The theory will be based upon art history, contemporary art theory, philosophy, marketing, management, creative writing, art and communication. Baseline In addition to the projects, the curriculum consists of a baseline: an in-depth programme with attention for theory, skills training and reflection. In theory education, disciplines such as art history, art analysis, dramaturgy, philosophy, text analysis and sociology are drawn on in order to explore specific themes addressed in project education in more depth. Examples of skills training are singing, design skills and Multi Media training. Focus During the programme, you’ll further develop your own direction of artistic and intellectual growth. You’ll also learn how to manage your projects professionally and make them financially viable. In the second year, there is time to further train your capacities in projects with external partners. In the third year, you’ll develop and complete a graduation project of your own. You’ll write a graduation thesis in which you describe the research done in preparation of your graduation, the concept you developed based on this research, and your artistic working process, as well as the entrepreneurial aspects of your entire graduation project. Next to the thesis, your graduation project consists of an artistic part for which you can choose your own artistic medium. Formal requirements - pre-university secondary education (or equivalent) - evidence of artistic aptitude - advanced in English - collaborative skills Where? iArts is located in the heart of Maastricht, a European centre of culture and home to 11,000 students. Bachelors in Arts in Europe 2017. “I think art, if it’s meaningful at all, is a conversation with other artists. You say something, they say something, you move back and forth.” John Baldessari Metàfora’s Training Program in Studio Arts Metàfora offers a complete Training program for students who wish to pursue a career as artists. This option can be considered as a valid alternative to a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (BFA). Art is about understanding the way an idea is communicated to you. Art is about discovering the potential of a material or a form, but also about challenging beliefs before they become too rooted. Metàfora’s Training Program encourages students to investigate intuitively through techniques and materials, but we also support artists who engage in conceptual analysis, breaking conventional frames and narratives. What is important is the wish for thinking and growing, a need for understanding the now. What is the Training Program: aims and objectives The Training Program in Fine Arts is divided into two sections: Year 1 (Certificate in Studio Arts ) and Year 2-3 (Diploma in Studio Arts / Advanced Diploma in Studio Arts). Any of the 3 years of the training program can be undertaken independently (admission according to general admission requirements). Metàfora’s Training Program is small and intimate in comparison with the big universities worldwide, and this carries with it a series of advantages: the International Workshop offers a homely studio atmosphere where all students are attended individually. The scheduled activities are designed as a flexible support around the creative practice of each student rather than vice-versa. While encouraging both aesthetic concerns and conceptual investigation, the aim of the program is to help students acquire the necessary tools for independent artistic investigation. Metàfora’s training program provides a rich environment for growth and opportunity in the current, vibrant art scene. Among the activities specifically designed for these students are several exhibitions, both on-campus projects, as well as events and projects in different commercial galleries and institutions around Barcelona.
